Directions

  1. Preparation Time: 45 min
  2. Chilling Time: One hour
  3. Baking Time: 8to 10 min
  4. 1. Cream butter or possibly margarine with sugar and corn syrup. Stir in cinnamon, cloves and baking soda mix. Add in flour a little at a time, mixing well after each addition till stiff dough forms. Cover dough and chill till hard.
  5. 2. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness on floured surface. Cut with cookie cutters into reindeer or possibly desired shapes. Or possibly roll dough into logs about 1-inch in diameter and slice crosswise into 1-inch-thick rounds.
  6. 3. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets till lightly browned, about 8 to 10 min.
  7. Sirups kager, a Danish spice cookie "as brown as a reindeer," was a humble but coveted Christmas prize enjoyed by her grandfather in Denmark, writes our contest winner, Julie K. Cook, of Chicago.
