Trifle is a kind of dessert which has layers of sponge cake, custard, jelly, fruits and whipped cream. My kids love this sweet dish. I used to serve this layered dessert on special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla essence
  • 1/2 cup custard powder
  • 1 cup normal water
  • sponge cake or Swiss rolls, sliced
  • 1 cup fruit cocktail
  • 1/2 cup Nestle' cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp. sugar

Directions

  1. Boil milk and add sugar.
  2. Stir in vanilla essence.
  3. Mix custard powder and water in a bowl and pour into simmering milk. Stir until thickened. Cool.
  4. Spread sponge cake in a dish.
  5. Pour custard over cake.
  6. Beat cream. Add egg yolk and sugar, continue whipping until smooth.
  7. Spread whipped cream over the custard.
  8. Topped with fruit cocktail.
  9. NOTE: If custard powder is not available, cornflour may be used. Just add a pinch of yellow food color. Chopped jellies may be added in this recipe as topping.
