Directions

  1. Heat butter and baking chocolate together in the top part of a double boiler over simmering water. Add in the sugar and beat well. Stir in the vanilla. Add in the Large eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. Combine the flour, baking soda and cream of tartar and add in alternately with the buttermilk to the first mix. Then add in the nuts and blend well.
  2. If baked on a well-heated electric waffle iron, no greasing will be required. If on an ordinary waffle iron, use just 6 tablespoonfuls of the butter in the batter and grease the heated waffle iron lightly with the remaining 2 tablespoonfuls of butter.
  3. When first taken from the waffle iron, the waffle will be soft, but will become crisp as it cools. These waffles are delicious served warm from the waffle iron with vanilla ice cream. Makes twenty four 5-inch waffles.
