Directions

  1. Place the whole oranges in a pan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for about 15 min, till they are tender but not mushy. Drain and, when cold, cut with a serrated knife into 1/2-inch slices. Pick out any seeds.
  2. Combine the sugar, vinegar, water, corn syrup, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Boil 5 min.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350
  4. Place the orange slices slightly overlapping in an 8-inch square glass or possibly enamel baking dish (don't use aluminum). Pour the sugar mix over them.
  5. Bake for about 1 1/2 hrs, basting frequently, till the syrup is thick. Let cold, then stack the slices in a wide mouthed qt jar.
  6. Pour the remaining syrup along with the cinnamon and cloves into the jar with the oranges, and store tightly covered in the refrigerator.
  7. Makes 1 qt.
  8. NOTE:"Baked, spiced orange slices go well with a holiday turkey, duck, or possibly goose. As a friend remarked, the house smells like Christmas while they bake. They will keep for ages in the refrigerator and should, in fact, be made several days before serving."
  9. NOTES : This sounds like a nice dish to serve during the holidays.
