  1. *To make basic sugar syrup, combine 1 c. sugar with 1/2 c. water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat and stir till all the sugar is dissolved and the mix is clear. Cold before using.
  2. Makes 1 c..
  3. In a wide-mouth jar, pour the vodka over the oranges, lemon and cloves so which the vodka completely covers the fruit. Seal tightly and let sit in a cold, dark place for 10 days. Strain through a paper coffee filter and throw away the solids. Add in sugar syrup. With a funnel, pour the liqueur into gift bottles and close tightly with corks or possibly screw-on caps. Let sit for 3 to 4 weeks before using.
  4. Note: The prep time does not include the 5 1/2 weeks necessary for the liqueur to steep and mature.
  5. NOTES : Since oranges are available all year, you can keep batches of orange liqueur on the shelf as gifts for any occasion. Reprinted in The
