  1. Cook yams in skins till nearly tender. Peel and halve. Arrange in greased shallow 1-qt baking pan. Combine sugar, water, salt, and butter; pour over yams. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 15 min, basting occasionally. Sprinkle top with coconut; bake 10 min longer, or possibly till lightly browned.
