Directions

  1. Sift dry ingredients. Add in shortening and work dough with fingers or possibly blender as for pie crust (can also be processed in food processor). Add in yeast mixed with 1/2 cup lukewarm water and dissolved according to directions. Add in buttermilk and knead with hands till all ingredients are well mixed.Put dough in bowl, cover lightly to avoid drying out and set in refrigerator till ready to use. Dough can be used at once, but is better if left overnight.
  2. For rolls: Using 1/2 of dough, roll 1/2 inch thick. Brush with butter and fold. Pinch edges together. Let rise 1 1/2 to 3 hrs. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 min.
  3. For loaves: Divide dough in half and form. Place in loaf pans and let rise. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 min.
