Deep Fried Pizza Rolls #SundaySupper

These Deep Fried Pizza Rolls are light and airy with a cheesy pepperoni filling. Reminiscent of fair food (think fried bread dough!) this is a treat that is normally enjoyed back home in Canton, NY at Sergi’s Ristorante and one of our favorite items on their menu, one we haven’t found anywhere else we have visited!
This week the Sunday Supper Tastemakers are sharing their Regional Specialties. Food that you seem to only find at a special place back home. That is what these Deep Fried Pizza Rolls are to us!

%20this%20is%20a%20treat%20that%20is%20normally%20enjoyed%20back%20home%20in%20Canton,%20NY%20at%20Sergi%E2%80%99s%20Ristorante%20and%20one%20of%20our%20favorite%20items%20on%20their%20menu,%20one%20we%20haven%E2%80%99t%20found%20anywhere%20else%20we%20have%20visited!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20week%20the%20Sunday%20Supper%20Tastemakers%20are%20sharing%20their%20Regional%20Specialties.%20Food%20that%20you%20seem%20to%20only%20find%20at%20a%20special%20place%20back%20home.%20That%20is%20what%20these%20Deep%20Fried%20Pizza%20Rolls%20are%20to%20us!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20week%20Sue%20over%20at%20A%20Palatable%20Pastime%20is%20hosting%20our%20event.%20Thanks%20Sue!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESergi%E2%80%99s%20is%20this%20little%20Italian%20Ristorante%20located%20in%20Canton,%20NY.%20They%20have%20a%20second%20location%20in%20Potsdam,%20NY%20and%20with%20Canton%20and%20Potsdam%20having%204%20universities%20between%20them,%20it%20is%20safe%20to%20say%20that%20the%20Deep%20Fried%20Pizza%20Roll%20is%20something%20that%20many%20former%20students%20reminisce%20about.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrowing%20up,%20we%20never%20ate%20out%20much%20and%20always%20went%20to%20Gouverneur%20when%20we%20went%20shopping%20and%20when%20we%20did%20eat%20out%20it%20was%20at%20places%20like%20Dairy%20Queen%20(Home%20of%20the%20Brazier%20Burger)%20or%20Dixie%20Lee%20(where%20you%20could%20get%20awesome%20deep%20fried%20chicken%20and%20fish).%20However,%20when%20I%20hit%20my%20college%20years%20and%20went%20to%20one%20of%20those%20four%20universities%20I%20quickly%20became%20familiar%20with%20Sergi%E2%80%99s%20and%20their%20famous%20Deep%20Fried%20Pizza%20Rolls!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20did%20my%20best%20to%20replicate%20their%20recipe%20and%20while%20these%20were%20delicious,%20they%20still%20weren%E2%80%99t%20%E2%80%9CSergi%E2%80%99s%E2%80%9D%20recipe.%20Sergi%E2%80%99s%20is%20unique.%20Their%20crust%20is%20a%20crispy%20exterior%20and%20not%20as%20doughy.%20My%20recipe%20turned%20out%20a%20little%20thicker.%20I%20did%20buy%20a%20locally%20made%20Italian%20pizza%20dough%20that%20is%20sold%20in%20the%20Albany%20area%20to%20use%20rather%20than%20a%20homemade%20one.%20While%20I%20am%20not%20against%20making%20my%20own%20dough,%20shortcuts%20can%20be%20handy%20when%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20a%20lot%20of%20time%20or%20energy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20probably%20could%20have%20put%20a%20little%20more%20cheese%20in%20my%20dough,%20but%20I%20swayed%20away%20from%20doing%20so%20because%20I%20am%20watching%20my%20intake%20of%20calories%20and%20I%20was%20already%20deep%20frying%20this!%20I%20also%20was%20nervous%20about%20the%20possibility%20of%20the%20dough%20having%20a%20seep%20hole%20where%20my%20grease%20would%20spatter%20up%20on%20me.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20the%20biggest%20fan%20of%20frying%20although%20I%20do%20love%20fried%20foods!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20mad%20sure%20to%20pinch%20all%20the%20edges%20of%20my%20dough%20together%20really%20well,%20and%20as%20you%20can%20see%20from%20the%20photo%20below,%20it%20puffed%20up%20quite%20nicely%20in%20the%20oil!%20My%20only%20issue%20was%20the%20cheese%20inside%20did%20not%20melt%20enough%20for%20me%20so%20I%20had%20to%20put%20mine%20in%20the%20oven%20after%20it%20was%20cooked%20in%20the%20oil%20to%20melt%20the%20cheese%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20all%20is%20said%20and%20done,%20these%20are%20good%20when%20you%20can%E2%80%99t%20get%20the%20real%20thing.%20However,%20if%20you%20are%20ever%20in%20Canton%20or%20Potsdam,%20NY,%20I%20highly%20recommend%20you%20go%20to%20Sergi%E2%80%99s%20and%20get%20their%20Deep%20Fried%20Pizza%20Roll.%20It%20is%20absolutely%20worth%20the%20indulgence!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETip:%20When%20deep%20frying%20food%20always%20use%20a%20thermometer%20to%20make%20sure%20your%20temperate%20is%20not%20too%20hot%20or%20too%20cool.%20When%20removing%20the%20fried%20food%20from%20the%20deep%20fat%20I%20have%20found%20that%20the%20best%20way%20to%20drain%20it%20is%20on%20a%20paper%20bag.%20The%20paper%20bag%20absorbs%20the%20oil%20and%20I%20find%20my%20finished%20product%20to%20be%20less%20greasy%20than%20if%20I%20were%20to%20use%20paper%20towels.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDeep%20Fried%20Pizza%20Rolls%20%23SundaySupper%20%20%20%20Author:%20Grumpy's%20Honeybunch%20%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPizza%20Dough%20Mozzarella%20Cheese%20Turkey%20Pepperoni%20Pasta%20Sauce%20(or%20Pizza%20Sauce)%20Canola%20oil%20for%20frying%20%20%20Instructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPress%20dough%20out%20into%20a%20circle%20as%20you%20would%20for%20a%20pizza.%20On%20%C2%BD%20of%20the%20dough%20layer%20cheese,%20sauce,%20and%20pepperoni.%20Fold%20dough%20over%20and%20crimp%20edges%20together%20well.%20Let%20sit%20about%2010%20minutes%20prior%20to%20deep%20frying.%20When%20oil%20is%20at%20375%20degrees,%20gently%20place%20pizza%20roll%20in%20oil.%20Dough%20should%20immediately%20bubble%20and%20float%20to%20the%20top.%20Cook%20until%20well%20browned%20on%20both%20sides.%20If%20desired,%20place%20in%20oven%20to%20keep%20warm%20until%20ready%20to%20serve.%20Serve%20with%20extra%20sauc
