This recipe is from an old newspaper clipping. It is said to be from the The Akron (PA) Restaurant (now out of business).
Ingredients
- Cake:
- 1 and 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 T. cocoa
- 2 oz. red food coloring
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 cup flour
- 1 and 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 T. vinegar
- Frosting:
- 1/4 lb. butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 8 T. shortening
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2/3 cup milk
- 3 T. flour
Directions
- Cream butter, sugar, and eggs.
- Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed mixture.
- Mix salt and vanilla in buttermilk, and add alternately with flour.
- Mix baking soda with vinegar and add last. Do not beat!
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
- Makes 2 layers or a 9x13" pan.
- For frosting: Combine all ingredients and mix in a mixer for 12 minutes.
