  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place shortening in an 8 1/2- by 4 1/2- by 2 3/4-inch nonstick loaf pan. Transfer to oven till melted. Thoroughly preheat the shortening-coated loaf pan so which the batter actually sizzles when you pour it in.
  2. Sift together sugar, flour, cornmeal, and salt. Combine buttermilk and baking soda in a glass measuring c., then stir into dry ingredients till combined. Add in melted shortening from the loaf pan; stir to combine.
  3. Pour batter into the warm loaf pan, and bake till golden, 50 to 60 min. Transfer to a rack to cold before slicing.
  4. This recipe yields 1 loaf.
  5. Yield: 1 loaf
