.%20Yet%20I've%20never%20considered%20making%20it%20myself%20because%20I%20just%20assumed%20it%20would%20be%20too%20much%20of%20a%20pain%20in%20the%20ass.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20wrong.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(You%20should%20re-read%20that%20sentence%20because%20I%20don't%20say%20it%20very%20often.%20Just%20ask%20Mr.%20Ninj.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'm%20not%20going%20to%20lie%20and%20say%20it's%20the%20easiest%20thing%20to%20whip%20up%20any%20time%20you%20like.%20The%20prepping%20of%20the%20hazelnuts%20really%20slows%20down%20the%20whole%20process.%20It%20took%20me%20awhile%20to%20find%20bulk%20hazelnuts%20(I%20suppose%20you%20could%20buy%20them%20online)%20and%20peeling%20them%20is%20a%20bit%20tedious%20(although%20I%20got%20to%20try%20out%20the%20two%20bowls%20trick,%20which%20I%20still%20can't%20believe%20really%20works).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20it's%20worth%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20note:%20this%20recipe%20will%20challenge%20your%20food%20processor,%20so%20make%20sure%20yours%20is%20a%20sturdy%20one%20that's%20up%20to%20the%20task.%20I%20tried%20making%20a%20double%20batch,%20because%20I%20made%20the%20Nutella%20for%20my%20local%20food%20swap,%20and%20I%20seriously%20thought%20the%20motor%20on%20my%20food%20processor%20was%20going%20to%20burn%20out%20or%20explode.%20(Of%20course,%20I%20was%20simultaneously%20thinking%20about%20it%20as%20an%20opportunity%20to%20get%20a%20larger-capacity%20replacement%20food%20processor,%20maybe%20in%20a%20fetching%20red,%20so%20I%20was%20slightly%20disappointed%20when%20it%20did%20not%20explode,%20but%20that's%20just%20me%20being%20greedy.)%20Don't%20be%20ambitious:%20make%20single%20batches%20at%20a%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESimilarly%20but%20less%20dramatically,%20don't%20be%20too%20alarmed%20if%20your%20food%20processor%20and%20the%20Nutella%20both%20get%20a%20little%20hot.%20Yes,%20hot.%20The%20motor%20is%20working%20hard%20but%20the%20whirling%20action%20is%20also%20heating%20the%20Nutella,%20making%20it%20smooth.%20Once%20you%20pour%20it%20into%20containers,%20it%20cools%20down%20and%20becomes%20more%20solid%20and%20spreadable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EScience%20is%20brilliant.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20doing%20my%20recipe%20research,%20I%20found%20that%20there%20are%20a%20gajillion%20recipes%20out%20there%20for%20homemade%20Nutella.%20I%20chose%20the%20one%20from%20America's%20Test%20Kitchen%20(the%20Cook's%20Illustrated%20folks)%20for%20two%20reasons:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBased%20on%20personal%20experience,%20their%20recipes%20turn%20out%20well%20for%20me,%20even%20on%20the%20first%20try%20--%20and%20I%20didn't%20want%20to%20have%20to%20screw%20around%20with%20a%20lot%20of%20trial%20and%20error%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wanted%20a%20recipe%20that%20didn't%20include%20a%20ton%20of%20chocolate%20chips%20and%20sugar%20(unfortunately,%20lots%20of%20them%20do).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELastly,%20this%20recipe%20makes%20about%20two%20half-pint%20jars%20of%20Nutella%20and%20can%20be%20stored%20at%20room%20temperature%20for%20up%20to%20month%20(pfft%20--%20as%20if%20you%20won't%20eat%20it%20all%20before%20then).%20So%20you'll%20have%20plenty%20of%20time%20to%20use%20it%20to%20make%20Nutella%20poptarts,%20Nutella%20biscotti,%20Nutella%20popsicles,%20Nutella%20cheesecake%20brownies%20or%20the%20oft-pinned,%20much-ballyhooed%20Nutella%20cookies.%20Or%20to%20just%20eat%20it%20with%20a%20spoon%20straight%20from%20the%20jar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHave%20you%20made%20your%20own%20Nutella?%20What's%20your%20favorite%20thing%20to%20make%20with%20Nutella?%20The%20Ninj%20wants%20to%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChocolate%20Hazelnut%20Spread%20/%20Homemade%20Nutella%20(from%20the%20America's%20Test%20Kitchen%20DIY%20Cookbook,%20via%20Boston.com)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees.%20%20Spread%20the%20hazelnuts%20in%20a%20single%20layer%20on%20a%20rimmed%20baking%20sheet%20and%20toast%20for%20about%2015%20minutes,%20checking%20for%20doneness%20at%2012%20minutes%20(they%20can%20easily%20become%20too%20browned%20very%20quickly,%20so%20keep%20a%20close%20eye%20on%20them).%20Cool%20until%20easy%20to%20handle%20and%20then%20place%20them%20in%20a%20medium-sized%20bowl.%20Place%20another%20bowl%20of%20equal%20or%20larger%20size%20on%20top%20of%20the%20first%20bowl%20(it%20must%20create%20a%20seal)%20and%20shake%20the%20bejesus%20out%20of%20the%20nuts.%20You%20may%20need%20to%20do%20it%20several%20times,%20removing%20the%20fully%20skinned%20nuts%20each%20time.%20(Some%20of%20your%20nuts%20will%20have%20a%20little%20skin%20left%20on%20them%20--%20this%20is%20normal%20and%20totally%20fine.%20Don't%20make%20yourself%20nuts,%20ha%20ha%20ha.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20nuts%20in%20a%20food%20processor%20and%20process%20until%20they%20form%20a%20smooth%20paste%20(it%20will%20look%20like%20tahini%20--%20see%20photo%20above);%20this%20takes%20about%205%20minutes%20and%20you'll%20need%20to%20scrape%20down%20the%20sides%20periodically.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20remaining%20ingredients%20and%20again%20process%20a%20few%20minutes%20until%20smooth,%20scraping%20down%20the%20sides.%20As%20noted%20above,%20the%20mixture%20and%20the%20processor%20will%20begin%20to%20get%20hot:%20this%20is%20normal.%20When%20the%20mixture%20becomes%20smooth%20and%20slightly%20shiny%20and%20tastes%20muy%20delicioso,%20pour%20it%20into%20glass%20jars%20or%20other%20well-sealing%20containers%20and%20cool.%20Store%20at%20room%20temperature%20for%20up%20to%20one%20month.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
