Is there anything better than a new cookbook (or a first cookbook, in this case) from a food writer that you admire tremendously? Guys I was so excited when I heard Leela Punyaratabandhu from She Simmers would be releasing a cookbook. I adore her writing–she is funny with a dry wit, with awesome recipes and discussion of Thai food culture. And language (she has a background in Linguistics). And she is down to earth and relaxed about food–yes she knows the authentic way to do things, but she also won’t come after you with a pitchfork for substitutions.
I hope anyway, since I had to make them in this dish!

%20from%20a%20food%20writer%20that%20you%20admire%20tremendously?%20Guys%20I%20was%20so%20excited%20when%20I%20heard%20Leela%20Punyaratabandhu%20from%20She%20Simmers%20would%20be%20releasing%20a%20cookbook.%20I%20adore%20her%20writing%E2%80%93she%20is%20funny%20with%20a%20dry%20wit,%20with%20awesome%20recipes%20and%20discussion%20of%20Thai%20food%20culture.%20And%20language%20(she%20has%20a%20background%20in%20Linguistics).%20And%20she%20is%20down%20to%20earth%20and%20relaxed%20about%20food%E2%80%93yes%20she%20knows%20the%20authentic%20way%20to%20do%20things,%20but%20she%20also%20won%E2%80%99t%20come%20after%20you%20with%20a%20pitchfork%20for%20substitutions.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20hope%20anyway,%20since%20I%20had%20to%20make%20them%20in%20this%20dish!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20minute%20I%20saw%20Shrimp%20Curry%20Stir%20Fry%20in%20her%20new%20book,%20Simple%20Thai%20Food:%20Classic%20Recipes%20from%20the%20Thai%20Home%20Kitchen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E,%20I%20knew%20I%20was%20making%20it.%20I%20am%20decently%20well%20acquainted%20with%20Thai%20food,%20but%20I%20had%20never%20had%20a%20stir%20fry%20with%20eggs%20whisked%20with%20milk,%20curry%20powder%20and%20nam%20prik%20pao%20(chili%20jam),%20and%20I%20was%20instantly%20intrigued.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHowever.%20Celery%20leaves.%20Darn%20celery%20leaves.%20The%20recipe%20called%20for%20celery%20leaves,%20preferably%20Chinese,%20but,%20people,%20I%20could%20not%20find%20any.%20I%20did%20find%20Chinese%20celery%20at%20Jungle%20Jim%E2%80%99s,%20but%20it%20wilted%20before%20I%20could%20get%20it%20used%20and%20they%20only%20had%20stalks%20with%20a%20few%20greens%20attached.%20This%20recipe%20sat,%20waiting%20to%20be%20made%20(because%20by%20then%20I%20was%20determined%20and%20obsessed)%20by%20my%20bedside%20for%20something%20like%202%20months%20(shame%20spiral).%20Shame%20spiral%20because%20I%20had%20received%20the%20cookbook%20from%20Blogging%20For%20Books,%20which%20meant%20it%20needed%20to%20be%20reviewed.%20So%20I%20apologize%20for%20the%20delay,%20but%20it%20just%20took%20a%20while%20for%20inspiration%20to%20strike.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInspiration%20did%20finally%20strike%E2%80%93and%20I%20hope%20Leela%20would%20agree.%20I%20did%20not%20want%20to%20use%20chopped%20celery%20because%20I%20felt%20that%20would%20change%20the%20texture%20of%20the%20dish%20too%20much,%20and%20possibly%20change%20the%20flavor%20as%20well%20since%20the%20greens%20were%20called%20for%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20dish%20and%20chopped%20celery%20would%20probably%20need%20to%20cook%20a%20bit.%20But%20I%20did%20some%20reading%20and%20everything%20indicated%20that%20celery%20greens%20pretty%20much%20just%20taste%20like%20celery.%20So%20eventually%20I%20had%20the%20idea%20to%20shred%20the%20celery%20with%20a%20peeler.%20Having%20never%20tried%20the%20original%20dish%20(and%20especially%20because%20I%20also%20added%20mushrooms%20on%20a%20whim),%20I%20have%20no%20idea%20if%20the%20dish%20tasted%20%E2%80%9Caccurate%E2%80%9D%20but%20it%20was%20delicious%20and%20certainly%20very%20different%20from%20anything%20else%20I%20have%20ever%20made,%20so%20I%20was%20happy.%20As%20was%20my%20family.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20are%20worrying%20about%20the%20cookbook%20and%20ingredients,%20don%E2%80%99t.%20Truly%20the%20celery%20leaves%20were%20an%20anomaly%E2%80%93and%20for%20all%20I%20know%20you%20could%20easily%20find%20them%20still%20attached%20to%20the%20stalks%20where%20you%20live.%20Most%20of%20the%20Thai%20ingredients%20called%20for%20fall%20into%20that%20category%20of%20being%20recognizable%20but%20you%20might%20need%20to%20make%20just%20a%20little%20extra%20effort%E2%80%93good%20quality%20fish%20sauce,%20kaffir%20lime%20leaves,%20galangal,%20lemongrass,%20things%20like%20that.%20I%20suspect%20where%20Leela%20lives%20the%20celery%20is%20sold%20with%20leaves%20still%20attached!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENote:%20if%20you%20prefer%20to%20leave%20out%20the%20mushrooms,%20reduce%20the%20oils%20to%20one%20tablespoon%20each%20and%20proceed%20with%20recipe,%20skipping%20the%20mushroom%20step.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShrimp%20And%20Mushroom%20Curry%20Stir%20Fry%20with%20Shredded%20Celery%20%20%20Adapted%20from%20Leela%20Punyaratabandhu%20%20Author:%20TheSpicedLife%20Recipe%20type:%20Entree%20Cuisine:%20Thai%20%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20eggs%20%C2%BD%20cup%20whole%20milk%20(I%20used%20a%20splash%20of%20cream%20plus%202%25)%201%20T%20nam%20prik%20pao%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20T%20curry%20powder,%20toasted%201%20t%20salt%201%20t%20sugar%20%C2%BC%20cup%20low%20sodium%20chicken%20stock%201%C2%BD%20T%20vegetable%20oil%201%C2%BD%20T%20oil%20from%20the%20nam%20prik%20pao%201%20lb%20sliced%20crimini%20mushrooms%203%20large%20cloves%20garlic,%20minced%201%20medium%20white%20or%20yellow%20onion,%20sliced%20into%20%C2%BD-inch%20wedges%201%20lb%20med-large%20peeled%20shrimp%20(she%20calls%20for%20large,%20but%20I%20used%20medium%20as%20that%20is%20what%20I%20have%20on%20hand)%201%20fresh%20hot%20chile%20pepper,%20sliced%20into%20%C2%BD-inch%20strips%20--she%20calls%20for%
