When it comes to hot pot, Flushing just rules over the other boroughs. With so many options, Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot is top on my list.
I couldn’t take this cold weather any longer, so we ventured into my old hood yesterday for some good old steamy dipping fun. Seriously, the perfect winter fix a train ride away.

%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMongolian%20Hot%20Pot%20serves%20as%20the%20forerunner%20to%20the%20modern%20fondue.%20Its%20history%20stems%20back%20hundreds%20of%20years%20to%20the%20nomadic%20Mongols,%20where%20tribes%20would%20gather%20together%20around%20a%20fire%20to%20cook%20fresh%20meats%20in%20a%20communal%20pot%20with%20simmering%20broth.%20Overtime,%20hot%20pot%20is%20refined,%20but%20the%20fundamental%20ideas%20of%20fresh%20and%20healthy%20ingredients,%20sharing,%20friendship,%20family,%20and%20the%20excitement%20of%20gathering%20around%20a%20dinner%20table%20remains%20unchanged.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(From%20Little%20Sheep%20website)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELittle%20Sheep%20has%20over%20300%20locations%20around%20the%20States,%20Canada,%20China%20and%20Japan.%20The%20Flushing%20one%20has%20a%20modern%20decor,%20plenty%20of%20seating.%20Great%20variety%20of%20fresh%20ingredients.%20Very%20clean%20and%20good%20service.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThough%20hot%20pot%20is%20a%20more%20communal%20meal,%20there%E2%80%99s%20no%20shame%20in%20what%20I%20like%20to%20call%20%E2%80%9Csteamy%20dipping%E2%80%9D%20alone.%20They%20offer%20individual%20pots.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETheir%20set%20menu%20is%20about%20$15%20($9%20for%20weekday%20lunches),%20which%20gives%20you%20a%20good%20mix%20of%20protein%20and%20vegetables.%20We%20ordered%20a%20la%20carte%20which%20ended%20up%20about%20$40%20per%20person%20(a%20little%20hefty,%20but%20good%20quality).%20I%20think%20the%20best%20way%20is%20to%20get%20the%20set%20and%20add%20what%E2%80%99s%20not%20included.%20Most%20ingredients%20come%20in%20half%20portions,%20great%20for%20someone%20like%20me%20who%20wants%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20everything.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESoup%20Base%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20too%20scared%20of%20the%20House%20%E2%80%9CMala%E2%80%9D%20Spicy%20and%20since%20StakerBoy%20isn%E2%80%99t%20big%20on%20fiery%20dipping%20either,%20we%20got%20their%20House%20Original.%20A%20mix%20of%20herbs%20with%20beef%20and%20chicken%20bone%20stock.%20%20I%20spotted%20jujubes%20fruit,%20goji%20berry,%20black%20bean,%20garlic,%20scallion,%20sesame,%20ginseng,%20but%20their%20signature%20blend%20also%20had%20herbs%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20identify.%20The%20herb%20flavor%20is%20present%20without%20being%20medicinal.%20Well%20balanced%20and%20perfect%20for%20dipping%20anything.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20can%E2%80%99t%20choose%20between%20the%20two,%20there%E2%80%99s%20a%20split%20Ying%20Yang%20pot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDipping%20Sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20really%20no%20rule%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20what%20you%20want%20to%20dip%20your%20cooked%20ingredients%20in.%20My%20favorite%20concoction%20consists%20of:%20satay%20sauce,%20soy%20sauce,%20sesame%20or%20peanut%20paste,%20fresh%20chives,%20Chinese%20cilantro%20and%20garlic.%20This%20is%20my%20must%20have%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20hot%20pot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBecause%20this%20is%20basically%20cooking%20an%20ingredient%20in%20broth,%20the%20choices%20can%20be%20endless.%20Little%20Sheep%20has%20a%20huge%20list.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EProtein%20wise,%20the%20Angus%20Beef%20was%20nice%20and%20tender.%20But%20the%20Pork%20Belly%20won%20the%20pot.%20A%20nice%20mix%20of%20lean%20and%20fat.%20Not%20only%20did%20these%20paper%20thin%20slices%20cook%20in%20seconds,%20but%20it%20also%20made%20the%20fat%20less%20noticeable.%20The%20texture%20was%20almost%20buttery,%20without%20that%20clogging%20bite%20of%20fat%20of%20a%20thicker%20slice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20hear%20their%20lamb%20is%20really%20good,%20unfortunately%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20eat%20lamb.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20usual%20suspects%20%E2%80%93%20leafy%20greens,%20tofu%20and%20a%20variety%20of%20mushrooms.%20A%20norm%20in%20any%20hot%20pot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20for%20greens,%20I%20prefer%20chrysanthemum%20greens,%20it%20has%20a%20distinct%20bright%20flavor%20and%20sweetness.%20Snow%20pea%20shots,%20watercress%20and%20napa%20cabbage%20are%20also%20great%20picks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETofu%20wise,%20the%20frozen%20spongy%20tofu%20works%20well%20in%20the%20hot%20pot.%20Absorbing%20enough%20liquid%20for%20flavor%20without%20falling%20apart.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20all%20the%20mushrooms,%20but%20enoki%20and%20king%20oyster%20mushrooms%20both%20have%20unique%20textures%20and%20the%20ability%20to%20flavor%20the%20broth%20without%20overpowering.%20They%20absorb%20the%20broth%20in%20their%20own%20way,%20without%20losing%20their%20own%20characteristics.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOther%20favorites%20include%20lotus%20roots%20for%20that%20sweet%20crunch.%20Taro%E2%80%98s%20smooth%20starchy%20texture,%20sweet%20potato%20and%20corn.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20good%20hot%20pot%20also%20consist%20of%20having%20a%20variety%20of%20balls%20and%20seafood.%20Their%20fresh%20handmade%20shrimp%20balls%20are%20fantastic.%20Naturally%20sweet%20and%20tender.%20Bouncy%20to%20the%20bite.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFish%20Ball%20with%20Sweet%20Roe%20is%20another%20favorite%20of%20mine.%20The%20firm%20exterior%20holds%20a%20sweet%20liquidy%20roe.%20A%20burst%20as%20you%20bite%20into%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEgg%20Dumplings%20are%20special%20because%20I%20use%20to%20make%20them%20with%20my%20ChubbyMama%20every%20Chinese%20New%20Year.%20These%20aren%E2%80%99t%20as%20good,%20but%20they%20do%20the%20job.%20Filled%20with%20pork%20and%20vermicelli.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wish%20Manhattan%20had%20a%20decent%20Chinese%20Hot%20Pot%20restaurant%20or%20anything%20comparable%20to%20Little%20Sheep%20Mongolian%20Hot%20Pot.%20Hou%20Yi%20Hot%20Pot%20in%20Chinatown%20is%20one%20of%20our%20only%20options,%20but%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20even%20come%20close.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elittlesheephotpot.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E136-59%2037th%20Ave%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFlushing,%20NY%2011354%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E718.762.8881%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
