This Irish soda bread recipe is truly great any time of the year!
Ingredients
- Irish Soda Bread
- 4 cups flour
- 1 tbsp baking soda
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 6 tbsp butter, cut into cubes
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 3/4 cup buttermilk
- Sugar topping
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp water
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400*.
- Line a cookie sheet with no-stick foil.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, sugar and salt.
- Add butter and combine with hands until crumbly.
- Add raisins and mix.
- Add buttermilk. Mix until combined.
- Empty dough onto a floured surface. Press into a ball.
- Divide in half. Shape each half into rounds.
- With a knife, score the tops of each round in the shape of a cross.
- Bake 25-35 minutes. Until cooked in the center.
- Prepare sugar topping:
- In a glass measuring cup add sugar and water.
- Place in microwave for about 45 seconds.
- Stir and add to the top of each bread with a basting brush.
- Eat bread within 1-2 days of making.
