,%20followed%20by%20those%20that%20dwell%20on%20two%20of%20my%20favorite%20foods,%20rhubarb%20and%20asparagus.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20quickly%20rising%20post%20that%20will%20probably%20be%20number%20one%20soon%20is%20one%20I%20wrote%20shortly%20after%20starting%20the%20blog,%20about%20the%20poignant%20%E2%80%9CSeptember%20Song.%E2%80%9D%20Sometime%20in%20the%20past%20few%20months%20someone%20inserted%20a%20link%20to%20this%20post%20into%20the%20Wikipedia%20entry%20for%20the%20song%20%E2%80%A6%20and%20so%20people%20wander%20over%20every%20day%20to%20look%20at%20it.%20It%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20offer%20a%20recipe,%20but%20it%20does%20offer%20food%20for%20thought.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20coming%20year,%20I%20hope%20to%20use%20some%20of%20my%20blog%20posts%20in%20my%20next%20book.%20And%20I%20hope%20my%20audience%20will%20continue%20to%20grow.%20Please%20let%20me%20know%20what%20you%20like%20about%20the%20blog,%20what%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20like,%20and%20what%20you%E2%80%99d%20like%20to%20see%20me%20do!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20I%20contemplate,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20enjoy%20this%20(almost)%20autumnal%20anniversary.%20It%E2%80%99s%20fitting%20that%20the%20Jewish%20New%20Year%20falls%20in%20September,%20a%20month%20in%20which%20it%20seems%20natural%20to%20look%20both%20backward%20and%20forward.%20Thank%20you%20all%20for%20reading%E2%80%A6.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPosted%20on%203%20September%202013:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApples%20and%20the%20Universe%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPhoto%20Courtesy%20of%20Susan%20Hagen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20wish%20to%20make%20an%20apple%20pie%20from%20scratch,%20you%20must%20first%20invent%20the%20universe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20said%20the%20late%20astronomer%20Carl%20Sagan%20on%20the%20PBS%20television%20series%20Cosmos.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESagan%20was%20one%20of%20the%20great%20writers%20of%20popular%20science%20for%20a%20reason.%20He%20knew%20how%20to%20phrase%20complicated%20truths%20about%20human%20existence%20in%20down-to-earth%20ways.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20him,%20of%20course,%20the%20important%20noun%20in%20his%20sentence%20was%20the%20universe.%20To%20me%20(because%20I%E2%80%99m%20an%20ordinary%20person%20and%20a%20cook),%20it%E2%80%99s%20the%20apple%20pie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20to%20cook%E2%80%94but%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20imagine%20how%20anyone%20ever%20invented%20our%20most%20basic%20recipes:%20a%20simple%20cake,%20a%20loaf%20of%20bread,%20a%20scrambled%20egg,%20a%20pie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20my%20mind%20those%20breakthroughs%20are%20as%20mystifying%20as%20thinking%20up%20relativity%20or%20quantum%20theory.%20I%E2%80%99m%20glad%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20come%20up%20with%20them%20myself.%20I%E2%80%99m%20content%20with%20tweaking%20traditional%20folk%20recipes%20and%20asking%20my%20neighbors%20to%20share%20the%20formulas%20for%20their%20own%20culinary%20triumphs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENevertheless,%20I%20do%20know%20that%20very%20time%20we%20cook%20or%20bake%20we%E2%80%99re%20using%20science%20and%20recreating%20the%20universe%20in%20numerous%20ways.%20Even%20though%20I%20managed%20to%20avoid%20taking%20chemistry%20in%20high%20school%20and%20college,%20I%20use%20its%20magical%20processes%20every%20day%20to%20create%20meals%20for%20family%20and%20friends.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20follow%20a%20recipe%20or%20consider%20a%20specific%20food,%20the%20neurons%20(or%20whatever%20the%20heck%20does%20the%20work)%20in%20my%20brain%20conjure%20up%20the%20person%20who%20first%20introduced%20me%20to%20that%20flavor.%20And%20of%20course%20when%20cooking%20I%20create%20something%20new%20out%20of%20unrelated%20matter%E2%80%94my%20own%20personal%20big%20bang.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(I%E2%80%99ve%20had%20a%20few%20little%20bangs%20in%20the%20kitchen%20as%20well,%20but%20that%E2%80%99s%20another%20topic.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApples%20are%20all%20around%20us%20at%20this%20time%20of%20year,%20embodying%20the%20coming%20autumn%20with%20that%20season%E2%80%99s%20key%20characteristics.%20They%20are%20cool.%20They%20are%20colorful.%20They%20are%20crisp.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELooking%20down%20at%20us%20from%20trees%20or%20up%20at%20us%20from%20a%20basket,%20they%20evoke%20wonder%20and%20laughter,%20just%20like%20the%20universe.%20They%20are%20comforting,%20nutritious,%20and%20versatile%E2%80%94capable%20of%20waxing%20sweet%20or%20sour%20(again%20like%20the%20universe),%20depending%20on%20their%20use.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20dog%20finds%20them%20on%20the%20road%20and%20uses%20them%20as%20balls,%20illustrating%20gravity%20(wouldn%E2%80%99t%20that%20old%20apple%20lover%20Isaac%20Newton%20be%20proud?)%20by%20propelling%20them%20down%20the%20street%20and%20running%20to%20retrieve%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99ll%20be%20posting%20some%20apple%20recipes%20here%20as%20time%20goes%20by.%20Luckily,%20none%20of%20them%20actually%20takes%2013%20billion%20years%20to%20make%E2%80%94unless%20you,%20like%20Sagan,%20like%20to%20consider%20the%20very,%20very%20big%20picture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20Apple%20Scones%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20simple%20recipe%20never%20fails%20to%20please.%20I%20made%20it%20almost%20wee
