%20--%20the%20old,%20Craig%20Claiborne%20one,%20not%20the%20new,%20Amanda%20Hesser%20one.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFunny%20story%20behind%20this%20one%20--%20I%20bought%20the%20TNYTC%20in%20my%20early%20twenties%20as%20part%20of%20one%20of%20those%2012-books-for-a-penny%20clubs.%20You%20remember%20those,%20like%20Columbia%20House%20was%20for%20music.%20Do%20those%20even%20exist%20anymore?%20Regardless,%20it%20seemed%20like%20a%20good%20value.%20But%20this%20is%20when%20I%20had%20no%20idea%20how%20to%20cook.%20Therefore,%20I%20was%20actually%20disappointed%20when%20I%20got%20the%20book%20because%20the%20recipes%20seemed%20way%20too%20complicated%20for%20someone%20who%20was%20just%20learning%20to%20master%20pan-frying%20a%20chicken%20breast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20it%20sat%20on%20my%20bookshelf%20for%20years%20before%20I%20opened%20it%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'm%20starting%20to%20rediscover%20it%20and%20have%20already%20flagged%20a%20whole%20bunch%20of%20recipes%20that%20I'd%20like%20to%20try.%20I'm%20glad%20I%20held%20on%20to%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20now%20back%20to%20the%20soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20intrigued%20by%20a%20recipe%20for%20turnip%20soup,%20as%20they%20are%20in%20season%20now%20and%20it%20seemed%20like%20an%20unusual%20choice%20for%20soup.%20Carrot?%20Sure.%20Squash?%20Please%20--%20it's%20everywhere.%20Turnip?%20Nope,%20I've%20not%20seen%20that%20on%20a%20menu%20recently.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20modified%20Claiborne's%20recipe%20and%20the%20result%20was%20thrilling.%20Really.%20It%20was%20ridiculously%20easy%20and%20fast%20to%20prepare%20and%20the%20flavor%20is%20excellent:%20earthy%20and%20peppery%20while%20still%20creamy%20and%20filling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECan't%20you%20just%20see%20this%20as%20a%20starter%20course%20for%20Thanksgiving?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECreamy%20Turnip%20Soup%20(adapted%20from%20Craig%20Claiborne's%20The%20New%20York%20Times%20Cookbook)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20the%20stock%20to%20a%20boil%20in%20a%20medium-sized%20pot.%20Add%20the%20turnips%20and%20cook%20until%20very%20fork-tender%20(about%208-10%20minutes).%20Using%20an%20immersion%20blend,%20puree%20until%20smooth.%20Stir%20in%20the%20half-and-half%20and%20add%20salt%20and%20pepper%20to%20taste.%20Heat%20for%20a%20few%20more%20minutes,%20then%20remove%20from%20the%20heat%20and%20whisk%20in%20the%20egg%20yolk%20and%20butter.%20Serve%20immediately.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
