The recipe came out of a news paper some time ago. My family really love them.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 package dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 3/4 cup warm milk
Directions
- In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Dissolve dry yeast in warm water. Add 1 tablespoon oil to warm milk, put other spoon full in flour mixture. Add all wet ingrediants to flour mixture.
- Mix well, either with dough hook or by hand. If by hand, knead 5 to 7 minutes.
- Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/4 " thickness. Cut with a small biscuit cutter. Dip in melted butter and stack one on the other. I use an 8x8 baking pan. Two pieces per stack. Proof for 1 hour in 100 degree oven, and bake for 12 minutes at 425 degree preheated oven. Be sure to use the sugar as the yeast needs it for food.
- This recipe comes from Bertha Mays, Mildred Rowe's sister, who has no idea why the biscuits are called Alabama Biscuits
