!%20I%20mean%20I%20could%20have%20called%20this%20drink%20a%20Grapefruit%20Guzzler,%20or%20something%20as%20esoteric%20as%20Imperfect%20God.%20But%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn%E2%80%99t%20want%20to%20be%20guilty%20of%20that%20crime%20when%20I%20developed%20this%20drink.%20So,%20while%20it%20would%20have%20been%20easy%20to%20call%20it%20Grapefruit-Infused%20Gin,%20with%20Cocchi%20Americano%20and%20Elderflower%20(which%20is%20very%20SEO%20friendly%20and%20exactly%20what%20this%20drink%20is).%20I%20thought%20it%20would%20be%20best%20to%20simply%20call%20it%20Riff%20on%20a%20Salty%20Dog.%20It%20sounds%20both%20sophisticated%20and%20whimsical.%20Plus%20I%20think%20it%20adequately%20prepares%20you%20for%20what%E2%80%99s%20in%20the%20glass.%20That%20is%20if%20you%20understand%20what%20a%20riff%20is%20and%20are%20familiar%20with%20a%20Salty%20Dog.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20here%E2%80%99s%20a%20little%20history.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20lexicon%20of%20Southern%20California%20dudes,%20a%20Salty%20Dog%20is%20an%20old%20surfer.%20If%20you%E2%80%99re%20a%2010%20year-old%20boy,%20a%20Salty%20Dog%20is%20one%20who%20plunders%20the%20open%20sea%20and%20screams%20%E2%80%9Caye%20matey%E2%80%9D%20whenever%20possible.%20Neither%20of%20these%20salty%20dogs%20are%20the%20dog%20to%20which%20I%20refer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20me%20a%20Salty%20Dog%20is%20a%20classic%20cocktail%20of%20gin%20and%20grapefruit%20juice%20served%20in%20a%20salt-rimmed%20glass.%20I%20believe%20it%E2%80%99s%20well%20enough%20known%20to%20the%20drinkers%20among%20us%20to%20need%20very%20little%20explanation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20say%20riff,%20I%20want%20you%20to%20know%20I%20have%20never%20been%20to%20the%20Rock%20and%20Roll%20Hall%20of%20Fame,%20where%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20they%20consider%20the%20riff%20to%20be%20a%20short,%20repetitive%20pattern%20of%20notes%20(sometimes%20called%20a%20lick).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20that%20case,%20I%20guess%20I%20really%20should%20call%20this%20cocktail%20Riff%20on%20a%20Riff%20on%20a%20Salty%20Dog%20because%20I%20first%20encountered%20something%20similar%20served%20up%20by%20Gabriella%20Mlynarczyk,%20at%20Chef%20Michael%20Voltaggio%E2%80%99s%20Ink%20restaurant%20here%20in%20Los%20Angeles.%20Gabriella%20was%20a%20contributor%20to%20my%20Savory%20Cocktails%20book,%20so%20I%20follow%20everything%20she%20does%20closely.%20GREG%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUse%20the%20lemon%20wedge%20to%20lightly%20moisten%20the%20rim%20of%20a%20chilled%20coupe%20glass.%20Pour%20the%20salt%20onto%20a%20small%20saucer,%20spreading%20it%20out%20in%20a%20thin%20but%20consistent%20layer.%20Press%20the%20rim%20into%20the%20salt,%20cookie%20cutter%20style,%20twisting%20it%20back%20and%20forth%20the%20get%20a%20nice%20evenly%20coated%20rim;%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20gin,%20grapefruit%20juice,%20Cocchi%20Americano,%20St.%20Germain,%20simple%20syrup,%20and%20bitters%20to%20a%20cocktail%20shaker%20%E2%85%94%20filled%20with%20ice.%20Cover%20and%20shake.%20Strain%20into%20the%20prepared%20glass.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20immediately.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENotes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUse%20a%20vegetable%20peeler%20to%20remove%20the%20peels%20(without%20any%20white%20pith)%20of%202%20Oro%20Blanco%20grapefruit%20.%20Place%20the%20peels%20into%20a%20large%20jar%20with%20a%20lid.%20Pour%20in%202%20cups%20gin%20and%20infuse%20in%20a%20cool%20dark%20place%20for%20at%20least%202%20days,%20turning%20and%20rolling%20the%20jar%20occasionally.%20This%20makes%20more%20infused%20gin%20than%20you%20need%20for%201%20cocktail.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
