Gruyère Potato Gratin is the perfect side dish for any holiday meal–or even just Sunday dinner. Rich, creamy, and tangy from the gruyère, it is sure to be a hit! Merry Christmas, A Joyous Solstice and Happy Holidays in general!

%20at%20a%20romantic%20Valentine%E2%80%99s%20dinner%20or%20served%20with%20lamb%20for%20an%20Easter%20feast.%20Or%20frankly%20any%20old%20time%20you%20feel%20like%20having%20some%20cheesy%20potato%20comfort%20food%20goodness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20been%20planning%20to%20make%20this%20potato%20gratin%20for%20our%20Christmas%20dinner%20here%20at%20my%20house,%20to%20serve%20with%20beef%20tenderloin%20and%20get%20some%20better%20photos%20taken.%20But%20then,%20as%20I%20mentioned,%20my%20sister%20in%20law%20really%20wanted%20me%20to%20make%20it%20again,%20and,%20well,%20I%20am%20like%20a%20performing%20dolphin.%20Applause%20will%20definitely%20get%20you%20what%20you%20want%20with%20me.%20The%20point%20being,%20it%20was%20served%20in%20the%20dark%20at%20my%20parents%E2%80%99%20house,%20and%20I%20took%20the%20better%20photos%20of%20the%20leftovers%20(it%20was%20a%20huge%20meal%E2%80%93don%E2%80%99t%20judge%20it%20for%20its%20leftovers!).%20Here%20is%20how%20it%20looked%20right%20out%20of%20the%20oven%20under%20my%20mom%E2%80%99s%20bright%20cooktop%20vent%20lights:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20here%20is%20how%20it%20looked%20when%20it%20was%20first%20served,%20so%20that%20the%20cheese%20had%20not%20had%20time%20to%20chill%20and%20firm%20up%20(if%20that%20makes%20any%20sense)%20and%20the%20potato%20gratin,%20although%20looser,%20was%20also%20quite%20creamy%20and%20delicious%20(it%20was%20good%20leftover%20too,%20I%20just%20wish%20I%20could%20have%20gotten%20daylight%20shots%20of%20it%20fresh%20out%20of%20the%20oven):%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEither%20way%20it%20was%20delicious.%20Sammy%20has%20taken%20to%20calling%20this%20%E2%80%9Cthe%20potato%20casserole,%E2%80%9D%20and%20has%20begged%20me%20for%20it%20repeatedly.%20One%20quick%20note:%20if%20you%20do%20not%20have%20a%20broiler-safe%20casserole%20dish,%20take%20the%20foil%20off%20the%20gratin%20with%20about%2020%20minutes%20left%20in%20the%20baking%20and%20add%20the%20cheese%20on%20top%20then.%20It%20will%20not%20brown%20as%20nicely,%20but%20it%20will%20brown%20some.%20That%20is%20how%20we%20served%20it%20at%20Thanksgiving,%20and%20people%20still%20loved%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGruy%C3%A8re%20Potato%20Gratin%20%20%20Adapted%20from%20Epicurious.%20For%20the%20most%20attractive%20gratin,%20you%20will%20want%20to%20put%20the%20casserole%20under%20the%20broiler,%20in%20which%20case%20be%20sure%20to%20use%20a%20broil-safe%20casserole%20dish.%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20garlic%20clove,%20smashed%201%20T%20unsalted%20butter,%20room%20temperature%202%20small-medium%20onions,%20roughly%20chopped%206%20garlic%20cloves,%20chopped%202%C2%BD%20cups%20heavy%20cream%201%20T%20kosher%20salt%201%20T%20freshly%20ground%20black%20pepper%201%20T%20thyme%20leaves%204%20lbs%20russet%20potatoes,%20scrubbed%20and%20peeled,%20thinly%20sliced%20on%20a%20mandoline%20or%20in%20food%20processor%2010%20oz%20Gruyere,%20shredded,%20divided%201%20oz%20Parmesan,%20finely%20grated%20%20%20Instructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERub%20the%20smashed%20garlic%20all%20over%20the%20inside%20of%20a%209X13%20gratin%20or%20casserole%20dish%20(see%20notes%20above%20about%20broiling).%20Then%20rub%20the%20tablespoon%20of%20butter%20all%20of%20the%20inside%20of%20the%20dish%20as%20well.%20Set%20aside.%20Preheat%20the%20oven%20to%20325%20F.%20Place%20the%20onions,%20minced%20garlic,%20heavy%20cream,%20salt,%20pepper%20and%20thyme%20leaves%20in%20a%20medium%20saucepan.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil%20and%20then%20simmer%20gently%20for%2020%20minutes.%20Do%20not%20let%20it%20boil%20hard%20or%20you%20risk%20the%20cream%20breaking.%20Let%20the%20cream%20sauce%20cool%20for%20about%205%20minutes%20when%20it%20is%20done.%20Transfer%20it%20to%20a%20blender.%20Add%208%20ounces%20of%20shredded%20gruy%C3%A8re%20cheese.%20Leave%20the%20hole%20at%20the%20top%20of%20the%20blender%20lid%20open,%20and%20cover%20it%20loosely%20with%20a%20towel.%20Blend%20until%20smooth.%20Fan%20the%20potato%20slices%20out%20as%20in%20an%20accordion,%20tilting%20up,%20so%20that%20the%20tops%20will%20crisp%20a%20bit%20under%20the%20broiler.%20Fill%20in%20any%20gaps%20with%20extra%20slices%20of%20potatoes.%20Pour%20the%20cheese%20and%20cream%20sauce%20over%20the%20potato%20slices.%20Cover%20the%20dish%20tightly%20with%20foil.%20Bake%20for%2075-80%20minutes,%20or%20until%20the%20potato%20slices%20are%20tender.%20Sprinkle%20the%20remaining%20gruy%C3%A8re%20and%20the%20grated%20parmesan%20cheese%20over%20the%20top%20of%20the%20casserole.%20Place%20under%20the%20broiler,%20now%20uncovered,%20and%20broil%20until%20the%20top%20is%20bubbling,%20browned%20and%20a%20little%20crispy,%20about%205-10%20minutes.%20Let%20stand%20for%205%20minutes%20before%20serving.%20%203.4.3177%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
