- 35 lbs. of assorted grapes from our mini-vineyard (Mars, Niagra, Concord)
- 6 lbs. corn sugar (dextrose)
- 3/4 t. pectin enzyme
- 5 camden tablets
- 2 T. yeast nutrient
- 1 pkg. wine yeast

%20and%20with%20The%20Hubs%20knowledge%20of%20brewing%20plus%20this%20helpful%20website%20we%20muddled%20through.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20started%20with%20about%2035%20lbs.%20of%20grapes%20leftover%20from%20our%20jelly%20and%20jam%20making.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20First%20Estate%20Wine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20recipe%20(such%20as%20it%20is)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20%20please%20do%20not%20follow%20this%20recipe.%20%20%20We%20did%20not%20know%20what%20we%20were%20doing.%20%20We%20pieced%20this%20together%20from%20a%20couple%20of%20different%20instruction%20and%20recipe%20books.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20crushed%20them%20in%20batches%20using%20a%20potato%20masher.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20separated%20the%20juice%20from%20the%20grape%20skins%20and%20the%20seeds.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20placed%20the%20juice%20in%20a%20sterile%20food-grade%20five-gallon%20bucket.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20mixed%20in%20the%20sugar,%20pectin%20enzyme,%20and%20crushed%20camden%20tablets.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20placed%20the%20seeds%20and%20skins%20and%20pulp%20in%20a%20fermentation%20bag%20and%20added%20the%20bag%20back%20to%20the%20juice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20added%20distilled%20water%20to%20bring%20mixture%20to%20equal%20five%20gallons.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20covered%20with%20a%20sterile%20cloth%20and%20let%20set%2024%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20sprinkle%20the%20yeast%20and%20the%20nutrient%20over%20the%20mixture%20and%20submerge%20the%20bag%20with%20a%20sterilized%20stainless%20steel%20spoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20covered%20the%20bucket%20%20with%20a%20clean%20cloth%20and%20let%20it%20set%205-7%20days,%20stirring%20daily.%20%20%20(Actually,%20we%20forgot%20and%20didn%E2%80%99t%20stir%20it%20but%20twice.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%207%20days%20(and%20it%20was%20more%20like%209%20with%20us),%20we%20removed%20the%20bag.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20the%20fermenting%20bag%20after%20we%20squeezed%20out%20all%20the%20juice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20does%20look%20like%20we%20dissected%20Barney%E2%80%99s%20stomach%20or%20removed%20some%20other%20internal%20organ,%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20it?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDump%20the%20remains%20in%20your%20composter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20were%20using%20a%20bucket%20with%20a%20spigot,%20so%20we%20tapped%20out%20the%20juice%20into%20another%20%20fermentation%20bucket,%20leaving%20the%20sediment%20at%20the%20bottom.%20%20%20%20Discard%20the%20sediment.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20attached%20an%20airlock%20and%20added%20distilled%20water%20to%20equal%20five%20gallon%20of%20liquid.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20we%20are%20waiting%204-6%20weeks%20or%20until%20it%20becomes%20completely%20clear.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%E2%80%99s%20where%20we%20are%20now.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENotice%20that%20there%20are%20no%20step-by-step%20pictures.%20%20%20%20We%20were%20too%20stressed%20to%20stop%20during%20the%20process.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20read%20that%20wine%20making%20was%20a%20simple%20and%20uncomplicated%20process.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20so.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFermenting%20away.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20will%20revisit%20this%20in%204-7%20weeks%20and%20will%20let%20you%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKeep%20your%20fingers%20crossed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20figured%20that%20our%20five%20gallons%20will%20yield%2025%20bottles%20%20of%20wine.%20%20%20(I%20am%20probably%20more%20excited%20about%20picking%20out%20bottles%20at%20the%20brew%20store%E2%80%94I%20want%20blue%20ones%20but%20The%20Hubs%20says%20that%20is%20only%20for%20Riesling.%20)%20??????%20%20%20I%20think%20I%20will%20win%20out.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
