I was invited by Charles de Olim and Evros Pappas from Pappas Restaurant to taste the Christmas Eve specials that they will be including on their menu this year. I was lucky enough to be in Johannesburg for the weekend of the 14th and 15th of December and so took them up on their offer. I had flown up to surprise my mom for her birthday and I asked my dad if he would mind us going out to Pappas for lunch. Gisela was kind enough to allow me to become a party of three, which was great as we could sample one of each of the special dishes on the menu. Charles met us when we arrived and spent quite some time talking to us about the menu and their restaurant.

%20which%20was%20an%20excellent%20year%20for%20wine%20in%20the%20region.%20The%20wine%20has%20a%20peppery%20nose%20and%20is%20smooth%20with%20rich%20red%20berries%20on%20the%20palate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFood%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20menu%20is%20extensive%20and%20includes%20mezze%20platters,%20light%20meals%20and%20authentic%20Greek%20dishes.%20While%20we%20were%20looking%20at%20the%20menu%20warm%20flatbread%20was%20brought%20to%20the%20table.%20It%20is%20made%20on%20site%20and%20served%20with%20a%20flavourful%20hummus%20and%20a%20taramasalata%20that%20had%20a%20great%20citrus%20zing.%20The%20food%20should%20come%20with%20one%20warning%20%E2%80%9Ccome%20hungry%E2%80%9D.%20The%20portions%20are%20extremely%20generous%20and%20this%20is%20the%20first%20time%20I%20have%20ever%20been%20defeated%20by%20food.%20My%20mom%20had%20the%20600g%20Pepper%20Crusted%20Fillet%20on%20the%20Bone%20done%20rare%20which%20she%20described%20as%20being%20as%20soft%20as%20butter%20and%20flavoursome.%20The%20chef%20recommends%20you%20order%20this%20medium%20to%20rare%20to%20medium.%20My%20dad%20devoured%20the%20Goat%20Kleftiko%20which%20was%20slow%20roasted%20for%208%20hours.%20He%20was%20served%20the%20shank%20and%20the%20rib%20chops%20and%20I%20had%20a%20taste%20of%20both.%20It%20was%20amazing%20and%20I%20could%20taste%20the%20difference%20in%20the%20cuts%20of%20meat.%20Charles%20assured%20us%20that%20this%20would%20feature%20on%20the%20menu%20as%20a%20special%20whenever%20goat%20is%20available.%20It%20is%20not%20a%20meat%20that%20can%20be%20easily%20sourced%20but%20I%20can%20highly%20recommend%20that%20you%20give%20this%20traditional%20Cypriot%20dish%20a%20try.%20I%20had%20the%20Slow%20Roasted%20Pork%20Shoulder%20and%20the%20only%20negative%20for%20me%20was%20that%20there%20was%20too%20much%20fat%20left%20under%20the%20crackling.%20It%20was%20served%20with%20a%20gravy%20made%20from%20the%20pan%20juices%20and%20I%20loved%20that%20the%20pork%20was%20cooked%20with%20rosemary.%20Our%20meals%20were%20served%20with%20side%20dishes%20of%20the%20most%20delicious%20spinach%20and%20butternut.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20Main%20Courses%20At%20Pappas%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENot%20having%20space%20to%20even%20finish%20my%20main%20meal,%20I%20ordered%20espresso%20instead%20of%20dessert.%20The%20dessert%20menu%20looks%20great%20and%20I%20look%20forward%20to%20going%20back%20to%20try%20a%20few%20of%20them%20out.%20My%20espresso%20was%20served%20with%20a%20sesame%20seed%20biscuit%20which%20was%20crunchy%20and%20not%20overly%20sweet.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EService%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20service%20is%20excellent%20and%20the%20staff%20are%20always%20there%20but%20never%20hover.%20We%20were%20treated%20warmly%20and%20I%20was%20nearly%20coerced%20into%20ordering%20dessert%20by%20our%20friendly%20waiter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20and%20After%20At%20Pappas%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAmbiance%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20outside%20deck%20is%20wonderful%20to%20sit%20on%20and%20there%20is%20a%20water%20mister%20ensuring%20that%20you%20are%20quite%20comfortable%20in%20the%20summer%20months.%20The%20deck%20overlooks%20the%20square%20and%20the%20interior%20is%20cool%20and%20very%20inviting.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20%E2%80%A6%20go%20on%20a%20Saturday%20night%20to%20experience%20Greek%20dancing%20and%20plate%20breaking%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20True%20Greek%20Feel%20At%20Pappas%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETelephone%20Number:%20011%20884%209991%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOpen:%20Lunch%20and%20Dinner,%20Monday%20to%20Sunday%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAverage%20main%20course:%20R125%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECorkage:%20From%20R75%20per%20bottle%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFood%20type:%20Greek%20Cypriot%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDisclosure:%20I%20was%20invited%20to%20taste%20the%20Christmas%20Eve%20menu%20and%20our%20main%20courses%20were%20on%20the%20house.%20I%20was%20not%20required%20to%20write%20a%20blog%20post%20about%20the%20tasting.%20This%20post%20is%20in%20line%20with%20my%20blogging%20policy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20on%20leave%20until%20the%206th%20of%20January%20and%20will%20reply%20to%20blog%20comments%20then.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETandy%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETop%20of%20Page%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo%20votes%20yet.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlease%20wait...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
