%20and%20we%20would%20spend%20several%20hours%20decorating%20cookies%20and%20munching%20on%20cookie%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20house%20would%20fill%20with%20the%20smells%20of%20baking%20as%20the%20kitchen%20counters%20disappeared%20under%20sugar%20cookies%20and%20gingerbread%20men.%20%20With%20sugar%20highs%20and%20tummy-aches,%20we%20would%20freeze%20some%20of%20the%20cookies%20and%20eat%20the%20rest.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20my%20mom%20still%20makes%20Christmas%20cookies%20for%20the%20holidays,%20we%20no%20longer%20decorate%20them%20as%20a%20family.%20%20This%20year%20however%20I%20felt%20the%20urge%20and%20so%20one%20night%20last%20week,%20I%20turned%20on%20some%20Christmas%20tunes%20and%20made%20sugar%20cookies.%20%20This%20recipe%20is%20one%20of%20the%20two%20recipes%20that%20we%20made%20every%20year%20and%20it%20comes%20from%20my%20Grandmother%20Betsy.%20%20%20While%20I%20had%20plans%20to%20decorate%20my%20cookies%20in%20a%20sophisticated%20and%20elegant%20way,%20I%20realized%20that%20I%E2%80%99m%20still%20just%20as%20impatient%20as%20my%208-year%20old%20self%20and%20generously,%20and%20quickly,%20dumped%20sprinkles%20over%20all%20the%20cookies.%20%20Just%20like%20my%20family%E2%80%99s%20Christmas%20traditions,%20I%20guess%20some%20things%20never%20change.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%20about%203%20dozen%20small%20cookies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDouble%20the%20recipe!%20%20These%20cookies%20freeze%20well%20and%20they%20don%E2%80%99t%20last%20long.%20%20You%E2%80%99ll%20be%20glad%20to%20have%20extras%20on%20hand.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20a%20rack%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20oven%20and%20preheat%20the%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESift%20together%201%20%C2%BD%20cups%20flour,%20baking%20powder,%20and%20salt.%20%20In%20the%20large%20bowl%20of%20an%20electric%20mixer,%20beat%20the%20butter%20and%20sugar%20on%20medium-high%20speed%20until%20light%20and%20fluffy.%20%20%20Add%20the%20egg,%20vanilla,%20and%20milk%20and%20beat%20on%20medium%20speed%20until%20just%20combined.%20%20%20Add%20the%20flour%20mixture.%20%20%20Beat%20until%20combined.%20%20Add%20up%20to%20%C2%BD%20cup%20more%20flour%20to%20the%20dough,%20mixing%20to%20incorporate,%20until%20the%20dough%20is%20just%20thick%20enough%20to%20roll.%20%20Chill%20for%20at%20least%20three%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20dough%20on%20a%20lightly%20floured%20surface%20and%20roll%20out%20to%20%C2%BC-inch%20thickness.%20%20Use%20cookie%20cutters%20to%20cut%20out%20cookies%20in%20desired%20shapes%20and%20place%20on%20an%20ungreased%20baking%20sheet.%20%20%20Brush%20the%20cookies%20with%20the%20egg%20white%20and%20decorate%20the%20cookies%20with%20the%20sprinkles.%20%20%20Combine%20the%20dough%20scraps%20and%20repeat%20with%20the%20remaining%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20the%20cookies%20for%208-10%20minutes.%20%20Cookies%20should%20still%20be%20soft.%20%20Remove%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20cool%20for%20five%20minutes%20on%20the%20baking%20sheet%20before%20transferring%20to%20a%20wire%20cooling%20rack.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
