South Africans are very fond of heading for the bush and enjoying the great outdoors and because of this, many interesting and very creative meals have been created with just a few ingredients and the minimum of fuss
I saw this recipe the other day and it took me back to my camping days where we made similar desserts in enamel mugs and ate them round the fire

It once again just goes to show that one can create something very simple and tasty with just a little imagination and only a few ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons, brandy or sherry
  • 1 tin fruit cocktail (drained and the syrup retained)
  • 250ml ready-made custard
  • 8 finger biscuits or sponge cake broken up
  • ½ cup grated chocolate
  • 1/2 cup crushed nuts

Directions

  1. Break the biscuits into small pieces and divide between four bowls (or mugs).
  2. Sprinkle the port or sherry over the biscuits and add a little of the fruit syrup.
  3. Divide the fruit between the four bowls, spooning it over the biscuit.
  4. Warm the custard and spoon the hot custard over the fruit (cold custard is just as nice, particularly on a warm evening).
  5. Sprinkle with grated chocolate.
