Planning ahead for the holidays is not usually my style. As a matter of fact, I've been known to do (not finish... but, do) my Christmas shopping on December 23rd. Nothing like waiting till the last minute! Occasionally though, I surprise myself as well as those around me, and make an ultra-organized move that makes me smile as it comes to fruition.
Such was my organizational move this year to prepare DIY Homemade Vanilla Extract (See our September post for details on getting things started). Three months ago boxes of bottles and vanilla beans arrived at my door and had my husband raising an eyebrow at my latest project. %20my%20Christmas%20shopping%20on%20December%2023rd.%20%20Nothing%20like%20waiting%20till%20the%20last%20minute!%20%20Occasionally%20though,%20I%20surprise%20myself%20as%20well%20as%20those%20around%20me,%20and%20make%20an%20ultra-organized%20move%20that%20makes%20me%20smile%20as%20it%20comes%20to%20fruition.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESuch%20was%20my%20organizational%20move%20this%20year%20to%20prepare%20DIY%20Homemade%20Vanilla%20Extract%20(See%20our%20September%20post%20for%20details%20on%20getting%20things%20started).%20%20Three%20months%20ago%20boxes%20of%20bottles%20and%20vanilla%20beans%20arrived%20at%20my%20door%20and%20had%20my%20husband%20raising%20an%20eyebrow%20at%20my%20latest%20project.%20%20This%20project%20though,%20couldn't%20be%20easier,%20and%20while%20you%20may%20be%20a%20little%20behind,%20you%20are%20not%20too%20late%20to%20put%20it%20together%20for%20holiday%20gifts%20this%20year.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVanilla%20extract%20comes%20together%20as%20one%20places%20sliced%20vanilla%20beans%20(we%20got%20our%20from%20Beanilla)%20into%20a%20clean%20bottle%20and%20then%20covers%20with%20alcohol%20-%20different%20alcohols%20and%20different%20vanilla%20beans%20bring%20varying%20flavors.%20%20This%20year%20our%20extracts%20feature%20one%20of%20two%20different%20beans.%20%20My%20personal%20favorite,%20the%20light%20and%20floral%20Tahitian%20Bean,%20lends%20a%20lovely%20lighter%20vanilla%20flavor%20to%20any%20recipe,%20while%20the%20more%20traditional%20Bourbon%20Bean%20brings%20a%20touch%20of%20richness%20and%20a%20slightly%20bolder,%20traditional%20note%20to%20the%20table.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFilling%20most%20of%20our%20adorable%20little%20bottles%20(we%20got%20them%20for%20a%20good%20price%20at%20Specialty%20Bottle%20Company)%20with%20a%20good%20quality%20Vodka,%20the%20vanilla%20began%20to%20extract%20with%20in%20mere%20hours.%20%20Days%20later%20the%20liquid%20turned%20a%20light%20golden%20hue,%20and%20today,%20three%20months%20later,%20the%20bottles%20are%20ready%20with%20the%20deeper%20colors%20we%20expect%20from%20Pure%20Vanilla%20Extract.%20%20Note%20that%20the%20Bourbon%20beans%20seem%20to%20be%20bringing%20a%20richer,%20deeper%20flavor%20as%20well%20as%20color.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20hours%20old%20extract!%20%20Instagram%20from%20September....Filling%20a%20few%20additional%20bottles%20with%20Maker's%20Mark%20Bourbon,%20this%20vanilla%20takes%20on%20an%20even%20greater%20depth%20as%20the%20bourbon%20alcohol%20brings%20notes%20of%20vanilla%20from%20the%20start.%20%20Rich%20and%20dark,%20this%20pure%20extract%20is%20wonderful%20in%20a%20recipe%20where%20you%20want%20the%20vanilla%20flavors%20to%20really%20shine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20bottles%20closed%20with%20corks,%20and%20over%20the%20three%20months%20we%20did%20notice%20a%20bit%20of%20evaporation%20in%20a%20few.%20%20As%20such,%20a%20little%20online%20research%20showed%20me%20how%20to%20cover%20the%20bottle%20tops%20with%20a%20bottle%20wax%20providing%20a%20moisture-resistant%20coating%20which%20also%20preserves%20freshness,%20flavor%20and%20fragrance%20as%20well%20as%20giving%20our%20bottles%20a%20beautifully%20finished%20look.%20%20My%20research%20let%20me%20to%20Midwest%20Home%20Brewing%20and%20Wine%20Making%20Supplies%20out%20of%20Minnesota%20where%20we%20chose%20the%20burgundy%20color,%20but%20the%20little%20wax%20beads%20come%20in%20a%20multitude%20of%20colors%20for%20your%20every%20occasion.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20make%20the%20wax%20easy%20to%20remove,%20Liv%20and%20I%20wrapped%20a%20bit%20of%20baker's%20twine%20around%20the%20cork%20and%20around%20the%20top%20of%20the%20bottle,%20and%20then%20down%20the%20side,%20leaving%20enough%20to%20have%20a%20bit%20of%20twine%20hanging%20below%20the%20wax.%20%20Securing%20the%20twine%20with%20tape%20(to%20make%20dipping%20easier)%20our%20bottles%20were%20ready%20to%20dip,%20and%20we%20found%20the%20twine%20to%20work%20wonderfully%20as%20a%20little%20%22pull%20tab%22%20to%20cut%20through%20the%20wax%20when%20one%20is%20ready%20to%20open%20the%20bottle.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAttempting%20to%20ease%20clean%20up,%20we%20poured%20the%20wax%20beads%20into%20a%20clean%20and%20dry%20can%20and%20placed%20it%20over%20medium%20heat%20on%20the%20stove%20in%20a%20pot%20of%20water.%20%20Similar%20to%20melting%20chocolate,%20the%20boiling%20water%20was%20enough%20to%20melt%20the%20wax,%20though%20you%20might%20note%20that%20it%20took%20about%20about%2010%20minutes%20for%20the%20wax%20to%20become%20completely%20liquid.%20%20Please%20take%20great%20care%20when%20using%20the%20hot%20wax%20as%20it%20can%20cause%20serious%20burns%20if%20spilled%20onto%20the%20skin.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20melted,%20carefully%20remove%20the%20wax%20can%20from%20the%20water%20and%20place%20on%20a%20sturdy%20surface,%20like%20a%20counter.%20%20Check%20to%20make%20sure%20your%20corks%20are%20very%20secure%20and%20then%20dip%20the%20bottle%20into%20the%20wax%20as%20far%20as%20desired,%20then%20remove%20slowly%20keeping%20the%20bottle%20facing%20downward%20so%20the%20wax%20does%20not%20drip%20down%20the%20sides%20of%20the%20bottle.%20%20Alternatively,%20turn%20your%20bottle%20upright%20and%20tilt%20and%20twist%20to%20allow%20the%20wax%20to%20drip%20down%20the%20sides.%20%20Once%20the%20wax%20stops%20dripping,%20place%20the%20bottle%20on%20your%20counter%20to%20set.%20%20We%20gave%20ours%20a%20second%20dip%20for%20a%20thicker%20wax%20coating.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20vanilla%20extract%20%22brewed%22%20for%20about%203%20months,%20and%20while%20I%20felt%20it%20was%20ready,%20I%20wouldn't%20mind%20it%20a%20touch%20stronger.%20%20To%20beef%20up%20the%20vanilla%20strength,%20our%20extract%20uses%202%20beans%20to%20about%204%20ounces%20of%20alcohol,%20and%20if%20you%20want%20to%20give%20these%20welcomed%20little%20gifts%20this%20year,%20you%20could%20simply%20write%20a%20little%20note%20saying%20explaining%20that%20the%20extract%20will%20be%20ready%20in%20March.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEasy,%20tasty,%20and%20from%20the%20heart,%20Homemade%20Vanilla%20Extract%20works%20beautifully%20as%20gifts%20for%20any%20holiday%20or%20occasion,%20or%20maybe%20as%20a%20little%20present%20to%20yourself...%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
