Winter Salad of Red Endive and Beetroot; Fun Food Names Recipe
I like words.
I've done posts on words before....
Such as this pervasive usage that irritates me no end.
Or the havoc that a slightly mispronounced word can cause for the unknowing in a new language.
Today, I thought I would pass on some fun food names.
It all started when I decided to find out why Americans are determined to call small hamburgers, or, indeed, any small sandwich on a bun or roll, a 'slider'.
Curious?
According to Robb Walsh (who got his info courtesy of Barry Popick):
.....“sliders” most likely comes from the galley slang of the U.S. Navy, where breakfast sausage links are “monkey dicks,” ring baloney is “horse cock,” and regular baloney is “tube steak.” In the lingo of sea-going slop, hot dogs are “rollers” and hamburgers are “sliders” (because they slide in their grease). A cheeseburger is a “slider with a lid.”
Monkey dicks?
How about Spotted Dick? (British: Steamed suet pudding with dried fruit, served on custard.)
The British are famous for, er, interesting food names....
Here are a few you may have heard:
Bangers and Mash: pub food, consisting of a sausage with mashed potatoes
Faggots: meatballs made from pig 'lights' - heart, liver, belly.
Scotch Woodcock: toast with egg and anchovy paste
Hobnob: oatmeal cookies - (I love McVities Hobnobs)
Toad-in-the-hole: sausage pie
Jam Roly Poly: flat suet pudding, spread with jam and rolled up
And of course....
Black pudding: blood sausage - standard breakfast fare in the UK and Ireland.

While you onder that, here is our new favorite winter salad:
- Winter Salad of Red Endive and Beetroot
- 2 red endive, thinly sliced
- 2 cooked red beetroot, julienned
- 10 walnut halves, toasted
- 1oz (30gr) sharp white cheddar, crumbled
- 2 tsp Dijon-style mustard
- 1 tbs Balsamic wine vinegar
- 3 tbs fruity olive oil
In a large bowl, whisk together vinegar and mustard. Slowly add olive oil, whisking constantly until vinaigrette is thick. Add endive, beetroot, and toss well to coat. Divide salad onto 2 plates, top with walnuts and cheddar.
I'm really starting to love winter salads....
