%20we%20were%20hooked.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFather%20Ted%20was%20the%20most%20politically%20incorrect%20comedy%20I%20have%20ever%20seen%E2%80%A6.%20And%20so%20funny%20I%20actually%20fell%20off%20my%20chair%20laughing%20the%20first%20time%20I%20saw%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20we%20left%20the%20US%20we%20watched%20the%20Frugal%20Gourmet%20or%20Nathalie%20Dupree.%20In%20Ireland%20we%20watched%20The%20Two%20Fat%20Ladies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELately%20we%E2%80%99ve%20been%20watching%20The%20Hairy%20Bikers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20there%20are%20hairy%20bikers%20doing%20a%20cooking%20show%E2%80%A6%20And%20this%20recipe%20is%20based%20on%20one%20I%20watched%20them%20cook%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20don%E2%80%99t%20often%20cook%20with%20beer.%20I%20usually%20use%20wine,%20but%20beer%20seemed%20a%20good%20choice%20with%20venison.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVenison%20Stew%20in%20Beer%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETotal%20time:%202%20hours,%2020%20minutes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstructions:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20butter%20and%20oil%20in%20a%20heavy%20pot%20or%20Dutch%20oven%20with%20tight-fitting%20lid.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20onion,%20celery,%20carrots%20and%20fry%20for%20about%205%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20dry%20mustard,%20paprika,%20flour,%20stir%20and%20cook%20briefly,%20about%201%20minute.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20half%20of%20the%20beer%20and%20stir%20as%20it%20thickens.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20beer%20and%20stir%20well..%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20venison,%20herbs%20and%20stir%20to%20combine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECover%20and%20bake,%20350F%20(175C)%20for%202%20hours%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove,%20add%20salt%20and%20pepper%20to%20taste%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20thought%20it%20was%20rather%20strange%20that%20the%20vegetables%20were%20fried%20for%20a%20bit%20but%20the%20meat%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20browned,%20but%20I%20did%20it%20the%20way%20they%20did%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWorked%20a%20treat%20as%20they%20say%20in%20the%20UK.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWho%20am%20I%20to%20argue%20with%20a%20couple%20of%20big%20guys%20on%20equally%20big%20motorcycles?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20subject:%20Today%20was%20weird,%20oddly%20reminiscent%20of%20the%20Twilight%20Zone%20(cue%20the%20music%E2%80%A6.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFirst,%20I%20saw%20a%20squirrel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20I%20know%20that%20to%20most%20of%20you%20reading%20this%20that%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20even%20be%20worth%20noting,%20but%20I%20have%20never%20seen%20a%20squirrel%20here%20before.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENor%20anywhere%20else%20in%20France.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20a%20brown%20squirrel,%20which%20made%20it%20even%20stranger.%20In%20the%20US%20we%20had%20gray%20squirrels%20and%20red%20squirrels.%20This%20one%20was%20chocolate%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20running%20across%20the%20road,%20of%20course,%20so%20it%20was%20obviously%20no%20more%20intelligent%20than%20typical.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAbout%2010%20years%20ago%20I%20saw%20a%20black%20squirrel%20in%20Spain.%20That%20makes%202%20squirrels%20since%20we%20left%20the%20US.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESecond,%20I%20saw%20a%20really%20big%20toad.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo,%20toads%20are%20not%20unusual%20here.%20We%20have%20a%20lot%20of%20crapaud%20and%20the%20dogs%20regularly%20chase%20them%20all%20around%20the%20front%20lawn%20on%20warm%20summer%20evenings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20we%20rarely%20see%20them%20during%20the%20day%20and%20never%20see%20then%20out%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20field%20in%20winter.%20They%E2%80%99re%20usually%20close%20to%20something%20they%20can%20hide%20in%20or%20under.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dogs%20found%20it%20but%20weren%E2%80%99t%20in%20the%20least%20interested%E2%80%A6..%20Probably%20because%20it%20didn%E2%80%99t%20move.%20Critters%20aren%E2%80%99t%20any%20fun%20at%20all%20if%20they%20can%E2%80%99t%20be%20chased.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20went%20to%20have%20a%20closer%20look%20at%20what%20they%20were%20sniffing.%20They%20wandered%20off%20and%20I%20kept%20looking,%20trying%20to%20see%20what%20had%20been%20so%20interesting.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20was%20nothing;%20just%20clumps%20of%20clay%20and%20brown%20weeds.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20one%20of%20the%20clumps%20of%20clay%20blinked.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20a%20really%20big%20toad,%20easily%20the%20biggest%20toad%20I%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20seen.%20I%20would%20have%20had%20to%20use%20both%20hands%20to%20pick%20it%20up%E2%80%A6.%20Had%20I%20any%20desire%20in%20the%20world%20to%20pick%20it%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20laying%20in%20a%20hole%20just%20big%20enough%20for%20it.%20I%E2%80%99m%20guessing%20one%20of%20the%20magpies%20that%20are%20poking%20around%20everywhere%20had%20plucked%20the%20moss%20off%20of%20its%20winter%20den.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20tomorrow%20we%20get%20to%20check%20to%20see%20if%20the%20toad%20moved%20on%20to%20new%20digs%20or%20if%20we%20have%20a%20dead,%20half%20eaten%20toad%20to%20contend%20with.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELife%20in%20the%20country%E2%80%A6.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELast%20update%20on%20February%2020,%202015%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
