  • 1/2 cup dried black gram (or moong dal) wadis/vadiyams
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 green chillis, slit lenghtwise
  • a big pinch of hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp of tamarind pulp (mix in some water if it is too thick)
  • salt - to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • oil - for frying
