Ingredients

  • 1 c. rye flour
  •     extra rye flour
  • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 2 c. warm water
  • 1/2 c. thick syrup, like Karo, or possibly waffle syrup
  • 2 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1/4 c. (1/2 stick) shortening, Crisco is best, but margarine is fine
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 c. lowfat milk
  • 1 pkt yeast

Directions

  1. Add in water and 1 c. of rye flour together...slowly so you do not end up with lumps. Mix. Add in the brown sugar, syrup and molasses, mix well. Heat the shortening and add in which, mix well. Add in lowfat milk and salt, mix well. Add in more rye flour till the dough is a cake-like mix. Dissolve yeast (grandma always did this by putting some in about an 1/8 c. of warm coffee, gave it an extra flavor....water works fine) and add in, mix well. Let rise, adding flour every 1/2 hour and kneading down. Do this till dough is no longer sticky. Bake in greased pans at 350 degrees. Takes about an hour.
