Support, love and gluten free all combined
My apologies if this post seems a bit mixed up and all over the place, but that's how things have been lately for us.
While we were in Toronto a few weeks ago after the unexpected passing of my brother in law Daniel, we were greeted with loads of food, as is customary in the Jewish religion. ,%20myself%20and%20the%20loving%20Daniel%20(right)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eat%20our%20wedding%20in%202009.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDuring%20our%20initial%20mourning%20period,%20people%20came%20over%20to%20the%20house%20bringing%20us%20food%20and%20showing%20their%20support%20to%20the%20entire%20family.%20As%20you%20can%20just%20imagine,%20this%20is%20not%20the%20time%20to%20be%20questioning%20if%20the%20foods%20are%20gluten%20free%20or%20asking%20about%20ingredients%20being%20used.%20At%20least%20I%20didn't%20feel%20right%20about%20asking%20those%20questions.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20you%20might%20be%20expecting%20me%20to%20say%20that%20I%20simply%20ate%20whatever%20there%20was%20and%20suffered%20the%20consequences%20(aka%20stomach%20troubles)%20but%20in%20fact%20I%20did%20no%20such%20thing.%20Firstly,%20even%20though%20it%20was%20a%20terrible%20time%20for%20everyone%20and%20there%20truly%20was%20no%20way%20of%20making%20it%20any%20better,%20it%20seemed%20that%20the%20whole%20family%20was%20concerned%20about%20what%20I%20was%20going%20to%20be%20able%20to%20eat;%20as%20if%20this%20were%20something%20really%20important.%20I%20however,%20did%20not%20share%20in%20this%20concern.%20I%20knew%20that%20I%20would%20manage%20and%20that%20my%20dietary%20restrictions%20need%20to%20be%20a%20concern%20for%20anyone%20else%20but%20me.%20I'll%20admit%20there%20were%20a%20few%20times%20when%20my%20options%20were%20fairly%20limited,%20but%20on%20the%20whole%20I%20did%20not%20care%20so%20much.%20Thank%20goodness%20I%20wear%20an%20insulin%20pump,%20that's%20for%20sure.%20It%20certainly%20made%20managing%20my%20type%201%20diabetes%20a%20whole%20lot%20easier%20given%20the%20odd%20timing%20of%20meals%20and%20the%20uncertainty%20about%20what%20was%20going%20to%20be%20eaten,%20but%20I%20digress,%20that's%20not%20the%20point%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20point%20is%20that%20I/we%20have%20some%20wonderful%20friends%20and%20family.%20These%20friends%20and%20family%20were%20there%20not%20only%20to%20show%20their%20support%20and%20unquestionable%20love%20for%20each%20of%20us,%20but%20also%20to%20ensure%20that%20I%20(the%20pain%20in%20the%20butt%20that%20I%20am)%20had%20gluten%20free%20options%20to%20eat%20during%20this%20difficult%20time.%20We%20are%20so%20blessed%20to%20have%20such%20great%20friends%20and%20to%20have%20so%20many%20people%20who%20love%20and%20care%20about%20us.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnderstandably%20there%20are%20no%20pictures%20to%20share,%20but%20I%20will%20tell%20you%20about%20a%20few%20lovely%20gluten%20free%20meals%20and%20sweets%20that%20were%20provided%20while%20we%20were%20sitting%20Shiva.%20A%20great%20friend%20brought%20me%20my%20own%20gluten%20free%20honey%20cake%20made%20by%20Katz%20Gluten%20Free%20(as%20it%20is%20customary%20to%20eat%20foods%20sweetened%20with%20honey%20to%20mark%20the%20new%20year-%20Rosh%20Hashana-%20which%20fell%20at%20the%20same%20time%20as%20Daniel's%20passing).%20We%20had%20chicken%20soup%20with%20matzo%20balls%20and%20special%20for%20me%20the%20matzo%20balls%20were%20prepared%20separately%20and%20everyone's%20soup%20serving%20was%20made%20up%20just%20for%20them%20thereby%20allowing%20me%20to%20have%20mine%20without%20matzo%20balls%20in%20it.%20I%20had%20my%20own%20gluten%20free%20Challah%20to%20mark%20the%20Sabbath%20and%20Rosh%20Hashana%20also%20provided%20by%20my%20wonderful%20friend%20%22RL%22.%20Abisaac's%20friends'%20mother%20prepared%20my%20favorite%20butter%20chicken%20and%20green%20dal%20which%20is%20entirely%20gluten%20free.%20At%20the%20request%20of%20my%20sister%20in%20law,%20my%20parents%20provided%20an%20entire%20meal%20of%20foods%20from%20a%20restaurant%20called%20Jerusalem%20which%20services%20Mediterranean%20foods%20such%20as%20baba%20ghanoui,%20hummus,%20falefel,%20skewers%20of%20meat%20and%20many%20other%20Mediterranean%20delights.%20%20This%20was%20the%20first%20time%20I%20was%20able%20to%20have%20a%20gluten%20free%20falefel%20from%20a%20restaurant.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20were%20so%20many%20other%20meals%20provided%20with%20love%20and%20support%20during%20this%20difficult%20time,%20but%20here%20is%20the%20most%20important%20piece%20of%20this%20entire%20post...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20recall%20telling%20Abisaac%20that%20there%20are%20so%20many%20things%20I%20will%20miss%20about%20his%20brother%20Daniel,%20but%20one%20of%20the%20things%20that%20I%20will%20never%20ever%20forget%20is%20his%20ability%20and%20truly%20genuine%20desire%20to%20make%20everyone%20feel%20welcome.%20From%20the%20first%20time%20he%20ever%20cooked%20for%20me,%20he%20was%20always%20trying%20to%20make%20things%20that%20he%20knew%20I%20would%20like%20and%20always%20ensuring%20that%20everything%20was%20gluten%20free%20and%20safe%20for%20me%20to%20eat.%20He%20never%20ever%20made%20me%20feel%20different%20or%20separate%20from%20everyone%20else%20at%20the%20table%20or%20anywhere%20for%20that%20matter.%20Daniel%20never%20let%20me%20feel%20left%20out.%20He%20was%20always%20so%20inclusive.%20Daniel%20was%20a%20wonderful%20cook,%20a%20great%20broth
