Perfect Grilled Hamburger Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb grnd chuck (about 80 percent lean)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp grnd black pepper
  •     Buns and desired toppings

Directions

  1. You may want to sprinkle these burgers lightly with garlic salt while they are on the grill.
  2. Break up chuck and sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss lightly with hands to distribute. Divide meat into four equal portions.
  3. With cupped hands, toss one portion back and forth to create a loose ball. Pat lightly to flatten meat into 3/4 inch burger which measures about 4 1/2 inches across. Press center of patty down with fingertips till about 1/2 inch thick, creating a well in center of patty. Repeat with remaining portions of meat.
  4. Grill burgers, uncovered and without pressing down on them, till well seared on the first side, about 2 1/2 min. Flip burgers with a wide metal spatula.
  5. Continue grilling to desired doneness: about 2 min for rare, 2 1/2 min for medium-rare, 3 min for medium or possibly 4 min for well-done. Serve immediately.
