Mitch's Smoky Spicy BBQ sauce

My BBQ sauce is spicy and sweet, has a smoked flavour and is great with pulled pork, pulled beef or pulled chicken sandwiches. You can serve it with any meat to enhance its flavour.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cups (320 ml) packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 - 23 oz (640 ml) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup (140 ml) tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsps (30 ml) ketchup
  • 2 tbsps (30 ml) Cajun type seasoning blend
  • 2 tbsps (30 ml) red wine or beer
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) honey or agave nectar
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) Braggs soy sauce or soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) regular yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) Tabasco sauce
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon or lime
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) garlic salt
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) black pepper
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) Mesquite or Hickory Liquid Smoke

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, stir together the BBQ sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Do not cover. Simmer the sauce for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Makes approx. 3 cups.
