  1. In a large heavy pot with a tight fitting lid, combine split peas, rice, water, onions, oil, garlic and cumin.
  2. Bring to a boil, turn heat to very low, cover and cook for 1 hour or until water is absorbed.
  3. Add 1 - 2 cups more water if necessary.
  4. Stir in the pimento, soy sauce and pepper to taste.
