I was sent a breakfast hamper a few weeks ago, and in it (amongst other things) there were some of those sachets of instant oatmeal – the kind you just add water to. They were absolutely delicious and I loved being able to have a nice hot breakfast with barely any effort – much more satisfying than my usual bowl of cold cereal. But, when I looked at buying some more, I realised how expensive the sachets are, and how much cheaper it would be to make my own…
So, I did!
The shop-bought sachets cost around 25p each, whereas my homemade version is more like 7p per portion. I like it when my breakfasts are less than a third of the price!

%20there%20were%20some%20of%20those%20sachets%20of%20instant%20oatmeal%20%E2%80%93%20the%20kind%20you%20just%20add%20water%20to.%20They%20were%20absolutely%20delicious%20and%20I%20loved%20being%20able%20to%20have%20a%20nice%20hot%20breakfast%20with%20barely%20any%20effort%20%E2%80%93%20much%20more%20satisfying%20than%20my%20usual%20bowl%20of%20cold%20cereal.%20But,%20when%20I%20looked%20at%20buying%20some%20more,%20I%20realised%20how%20expensive%20the%20sachets%20are,%20and%20how%20much%20cheaper%20it%20would%20be%20to%20make%20my%20own%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20I%20did!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20shop-bought%20sachets%20cost%20around%2025p%20each,%20whereas%20my%20homemade%20version%20is%20more%20like%207p%20per%20portion.%20I%20like%20it%20when%20my%20breakfasts%20are%20less%20than%20a%20third%20of%20the%20price!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHomemade%20instant%20oatmeal%20%E2%80%93%20just%20put%20some%20of%20the%20mixture%20in%20a%20bowl,%20add%20some%20hot%20water,%20and%20leave%20it%20for%20a%20few%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20first,%20it%20will%20look%20like%20you%E2%80%99ve%20added%20far%20too%20much%20water%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20after%20a%20few%20minutes,%20the%20oats%20will%20have%20absorbed%20most%20of%20the%20excess%20liquid,%20and%20you%E2%80%99ll%20be%20left%20with%20a%20perfectly%20hot%20and%20creamy%20porridge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20creaminess%20comes%20from%20the%20milk%20powder%20that%E2%80%99s%20included%20in%20the%20mix.%20You%E2%80%99d%20think%20that%20using%20fresh%20milk%20would%20be%20superior,%20and%20it%20probably%20is%20in%20certain%20ways,%20but%20I%20actually%20find%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20tell%20the%20difference%20between%20oatmeal%20made%20with%20fresh%20milk,%20and%20my%20own%20instant%20version%20made%20with%20powdered%20milk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlus%20it%E2%80%99s%20much%20easier%20%E2%80%93%20I%20hate%20trying%20to%20heat%20milk%20in%20the%20microwave%20(it%E2%80%99s%20fine,%20it%E2%80%99s%20fine,%20it%E2%80%99s%20fine,%20oh%20wait%20it%E2%80%99s%20bubbled%20all%20over%20the%20place%20and%20made%20a%20big%20mess),%20and%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20like%20the%20idea%20of%20having%20a%20pan%20to%20wash%20up%20before%20I%E2%80%99ve%20even%20fully%20woken%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20powdered%20milk%20it%20is.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20added%20a%20bit%20of%20sugar%20to%20my%20instant%20oatmeal%20mix%20%E2%80%93%20you%20can%20use%20whatever%20sweetener%20you%20like%20(if%20any!),%20but%20I%20found%20that%20a%20bit%20of%20good%20old%20caster%20sugar%20worked%20just%20fine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20want,%20you%20can%20also%20add%20some%20mix-ins%20straight%20into%20the%20jar%20of%20instant%20oatmeal%20%E2%80%93%20dried%20fruit%20or%20nuts%20would%20work%20really%20well.%20I%20leave%20mine%20plain%20though,%20so%20I%20can%20choose%20what%20to%20add%20on%20a%20day-to-day%20basis%20%E2%80%93%20fruit,%20nuts,%20a%20drizzle%20of%20honey,%20a%20spoonful%20of%20chocolate%20spread%20(%3C%E2%80%93%20favourite!!),%20or%20even%20a%20dollop%20of%20jam.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99ve%20made%20about%20three%20batches%20of%20this%20so%20far%20this%20month%20%E2%80%93%20each%20batch%20only%20makes%20around%207%20portions,%20so%20feel%20free%20to%20double%20or%20triple%20the%20recipe%20if%20you%20know%20you%E2%80%99ll%20be%20using%20it%20often!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHomemade%20instant%20oatmeal%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Author:%20Becca%20@%20Amuse%20Your%20Bouche%20Recipe%20type:%20Breakfast%20Yield:%20Serves%207%20%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E300g%20(~%203%20cups)%20rolled%20oats%2060g%20(~%20%C2%BD%20cup)%20skimmed%20milk%20powder%2085g%20(~%20%C2%BC%20cup)%20caster%20sugar%20(or%20brown%20sugar)%20Optional%20mix-ins:%20dried%20fruit,%20nuts,%20chocolate%20chips,%20seeds,%20etc.%20Optional%20toppings:%20dried%20fruit,%20nuts,%20chocolate%20spread,%20jam,%20honey%20%20%20Instructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20rolled%20oats,%20skimmed%20milk%20powder%20and%20caster%20sugar,%20along%20with%20your%20choice%20of%20mix-ins,%20to%20a%20large%20bowl,%20and%20mix%20well.%20Transfer%20to%20an%20air-tight%20container%20to%20store%20for%20up%20to%206%20weeks%20in%20a%20cool,%20dry%20area.%20To%20serve,%20scoop%20about%2070g%20(~%20%C2%BD%20cup)%20of%20the%20mixture%20into%20a%20bowl.%20Add%20125ml%20(~1/2%20cup)%20of%20boiling%20water%20(or%20however%20much%20you%20find%20you%20need%20to%20get%20to%20your%20desired%20consistency),%20and%20mix%20well.%20Leave%20for%20a%20few%20minutes,%20then%20eat%20with%20your%20choice%20of%20toppings.%20%203.2.2925%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELove%20porridge?%20Try%20it%20topped%20with%20cinnamon%20plums!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
