Hillshire Farm introduces Hillshire Farm Natural Lunchmeat Recipe
by Anne-Marie Nichols

My kids take a sandwich to school just about every day. Last year, I bought cold cuts from a natural food line because I wanted my kids to have something that was as healthy as possible. However, the kids weren’t particularly fond of the product. So when this school year started, they asked to go back to their favorite Hillshire Farm cold cuts. I think it’s because they not only like the taste better, but they prefer the thinner deli style cuts of meat.

At first I was hesitant to do this. I prefer deli meats with no artificial ingredients, preservatives or colors. However, I remembered that last year my kids would eat everything in their lunch bags, but their sandwiches. I would put that same darn sandwich in their lunch bag for a few days, then finally throw it out. I hate throwing good food out, but certainly wasn’t going to force the kids to eat something they didn’t like – especially something as expensive as those natural brands!

The entire family loves Hillshire Farm deli meats. They taste great and I love using the recyclable containers for storing and freezing homemade broth. So that’s what I’ve been buying the kids this year for school lunch. Both kids like ham, which is very affordable since it comes in the large family sized tubs. Occasionally I get Nathan pastrami as a special treat. I also use the ham in quiche and chef salads. So far, no complaints from anyone and the sandwiches are getting eaten.

Lucie and Nellie try out Hillshire Farm Natural Honey Roasted Ham

Recently I learned that Hillshire Farm was coming out with Hillshire Farm Naturals™. This product contains no preservatives, artificial ingredients, colors or added nitrites/nitrates except those occurring naturally in celery juice. At $4.48 per package, Hillshire Farm Naturals are more affordable than the other brand I was buying. Plus, I can find them at Walmart and Krogers, so I don’t have to drive all over town just to find them. (I used to stock the freezer with the other brand of natural cold cuts just so I wouldn’t get stuck having to make a special trip.)

The new line of Hillshire Farm Natural Lunchmeat features four varieties: Slow Roasted Turkey Breast, Hardwood Smoked Turkey Breast, Honey Roasted Ham, and Black Forest Ham. My kids wouldn’t eat turkey if you paid them, so I only purchased the ham varieties. So far, we’ve only tried out the Honey Roasted Ham.

During the photo shoot for this post, Lucie acted as my food stylist and showed me how she makes her sandwich in the morning. She used two different types of mustard and dabbed a bit of each in the corners and the center. Then she used precisely three pieces of Hillshire Farm Natural Lunchmeat.

As she was showing me this, she kept eating pieces of the Honey Roasted Ham from the container and telling me, “Mommy, this tastes so good!” over and over again. I was thrilled to find out how much she likes it compared to the regular Hillshire Farm ham I normally purchase for her lunches.

Then she offered a piece to our dog, Nellie, who’s always very good at photo shoots and doesn’t ever get into the food. As you can see from Nellie’s reaction, she thought Honey Roasted Ham was pretty darn good, too!

Based on Lucie’s recommendation, the availability, and price, I’ll be buying my family Hillshire Farm Natural Lunchmeat from now on! Nellie’s going to be very happy, I’m sure.
