Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1 1/4 c. all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking pwdr
  • 1 teaspoon salt, optional
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 2/3 c. lowfat milk

Directions

  1. If using self rising flour, omit baking pwdr and salt. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Heat the butter in a small saucepan. Measure flour, baking pwdr, salt, garlic salt, basil and thyme into a bowl. Add in lowfat milk; stir just till dough forms. Turn onto a well floured cloth covered board. Roll to coat with flour, then knead lightly about 10 times. Pour sufficient of the melted butter into an 8x8 inch pan to coat bottom and sides. Press dough into the pan. Then dip a sharp knife into melted butter and cut once down the middle of dough. Then turn pan and cut crosswise into one inch "sticks" (usually makes 16 bread sticks). After cutting, dribble remaining butter over top and into grooves. Bake 15 to 20 min or possibly till golden brown. Recipe can easily be doubled for a 9x13 pan or possibly even doubled for thicker sections in an 8x8 pan.
