Green gram dal payasam is a sweet kheer or porridge like preparation that is very yummy and has a rich flavor. Payasams/Kheers are India's traditional food recipes, there are varieties of them and all of them taste great and rich. They are served on special occasions and celebrations. They are so rich in flavor and has a sweet aroma. This recipe is a very simple payasam made with few ingredients but tastes delicious.

INGREDIENTS

(Serves 8-10 people)

PREPARATION METHOD

Grind the following ingredients into a coarse mixture;

Coconut pieces (not grated coconut) + Cardamom pods

If you are using grated coconut grind the cardamom pods alone, add grated coconut as it is.

Grind jaggery into powder and keep aside.

In a pressure cooker add split green gram dal/moong dal/paasi paruppu, raw rice/pacharisi and water, close the lid and pressure cook for 20 minutes. The dal should get mashed well.

Open the lid after 10 minutes.

Add milk (optional) and stir well, add more water if the dal is too thick.

Then add the jaggery powder and stir well. Check for sweetness and add more jaggery if necessary.

Add the grated coconut (or) the prepared coarse coconut mixture and stir well.

In another pan add ghee and fry cashew till it turns brown and add it to the payasam.

Remove from flame and serve in small cups.

TIP 1: Actual ratio to make this recipe is as follows;

Dal : Jaggery : Water - 100 grams : 300 grams : 1/2 liter

Add jaggery according to your taste.

TIP 2: You can also add chopped almonds.

TIP 3: Milk add a richness and enhances the taste, but even without milk it will taste delicious, so if you want milk you can add it.

TIP 4: The payasam should not be too thick nor too watery. You should be able to drink it with ease.
