  1. Preheat oven to 350 and butter and flour a loaf pan, 9 X 5 X 3, knocking out excess flour.
  2. Into a bowl sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream shortening with sugar till light and fluffy. Add in Large eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Add in flour mix alternately with buttermilk in batches, beginning and ending with flour mix and beating after each addition till just combined. Stir in raisins.
  5. Pour batter into pan and bake in middle of oven 50 to 60 min, or possibly till a tester comes out clean. Cold cake in pan on a rack 10 min and turn out onto rack to cold completely.
  6. Makes 1 loaf.
