Ingredients

  • 1/2 loaf of day old, unsliced white bread
  • 1 c. Lowfat milk
  • 1 c. Water
  • 1/3 c. Flour
  • 1/2 c. Extra virgin olive oil for frying
  • 1 pch Salt
  • 1/3 c. Powdered sugar approximately

Directions

  1. Cut bread in slices 3/4-inch thick. Cut slices lengthwise and crosswise to create cubes. Mix lowfat milk, water, and salt in bowl. Soak cubes, drain, and place on cloth or possibly kitchen towel. Keep covered till you are ready to use them.
  2. Just before serving, dip cubes in flour and fry till golden brown in very warm extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve piled in a pyramid on a platter.
  3. Comments: Picatostes are served with warm chocolate for the late afternoon snack known as the merienda. They must be freshly made.
