,%20the%20words%20just%20get%20messed%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBecause%20I%20know%20what%20I'm%20saying,%20I%20read%20what%20I%20think%20I%20wrote.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20whole%20situation%20is%20exacerbated%20by%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20am%20always%20in%20a%20hurry;%20always%20behind%20whatever%20I%20have%20to%20do%20in%20a%20given%20day.%20%20I%20try%20to%20do%20too%20much.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpell%20check%20should%20be%20my%20best%20friend,%20right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWrong.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20very%20often%20turns%20my%20mis-typed%20words%20into%20the%20wrong,%20corrected%20word.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20do%20know%20the%20difference%20between%20wandering%20and%20wondering;%20their,%20they're%20and%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpell%20check%20only%20knows%20how%20to%20spell%20them%20-%20and,%20sometimes%20(often),%20picks%20the%20wrong%20one%20to%20spell%20right.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHuh?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApparently%20I%20had%20mis-typed%20'the'%20and%20spell%20check%20replaced%20it%20with%20'toe',%20properly%20spelled%20of%20course.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20the%20words%20stayed%20mis-spelled%20I%20might%20find%20them%20when%20I%20proof-read%20(I%20do,%20you%20know).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20like%20to%20chalk%20all%20this%20up%20to%20my%20superior%20intelligence%20and%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20have%20such%20vitally%20important%20things%20to%20do%20with%20my%20time%20that%20I%20can't%20be%20bothered%20to%20be%20careful.%20(ahem....)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20can%20carefully%20read%20a%20post%20the%20day%20I%20write%20it%20and%20find%20no%20errors.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETwo%20days%20later%20I%20can%20merely%20glance%20at%20it%20and%20the%20mistakes%20stand%20out%20as%20if%20they%20were%20highlighted%20in%20hot%20pink.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20it's%20something%20critical%20I%20ask%20someone%20else%20to%20proof%20it%20for%20me.%20%20I'm%20aware%20(even%20if%20I%20don't%20like%20to%20admit%20it)%20of%20my%20shortcomings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhy%20am%20I%20telling%20you%20all%20of%20this?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWednesday,%20amidst%20the%20drama%20with%20Emma%20(not%20recovered,%20but%20doing%20a%20bit%20better)%20the%20maire%20(mayor)%20called.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20went%20in%20to%20do%20the%20annual%20renewal%20of%20our%20Carte%20de%20Sejour%20(permission%20to%20stay%20in%20France%20for%20a%20year)%20I%20asked%20him%20about%20the%20Carte%20de%20R%C3%A9sidence%20(permission%20to%20stay%20in%20France%20for%2010%20years).%20I%20wanted%20to%20know%20if%20he%20handled%20that%20or%20if%20I%20had%20to%20go%20to%20the%20Pr%C3%A9fecture%20in%20the%20'City'.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHe%20didn't%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOther%20Europeans%20don't%20have%20to%20do%20either%20of%20these%20things%20and%20there%20aren't%20a%20lot%20of%20us%20'%C3%A9trangers'%20(strangers)%20here%20in%20our%20little%20area.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHe%20is%20now%20handling%20it%20for%20me,%20for%20which%20I%20am%20very%20grateful.%20%20(He's%20such%20a%20nice%20maire.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHe%20called%20to%20tell%20me%20that%20I%20needed%20to%20write%20a%20letter%20telling%20the%20Powers%20That%20Be%20why%20we%20want%20to%20live%20in%20France.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20can%20do%20that.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20has%20to%20be%20in%20French,%20of%20course.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo,%20he%20didn't%20tell%20me%20that...%20I%20figured%20it%20out%20all%20on%20my%20own.%20(Duh!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wrote%20the%20letter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20spell%20check%20in%20French.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20rather%20proud%20of%20my%20effort.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20to%20be%20safe%20I%20took%20it%20to%20our%20neighbor%20to%20have%20a%20look.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOther%20languages%20can%20be%20amazingly%20tricky%20sometimes....%20a%20word%20or%20article%20in%20the%20wrong%20place%20can%20totally%20(and%20embarrassingly)%20change%20the%20meaning.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wanted%20to%20convey%20how%20much%20we%20like%20living%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn't%20want%20to%20convey%20that%20we're%20planning%20a%20coup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20neighbor%20took%20the%20proverbial%20red%20pen%20to%20my%20letter%20with%20a%20flourish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo,%20you%20say%20it%20that%20way%20when%20you%20are%20unhappy%20with%20the%20recipient;%20no%20you%20say%20it%20that%20way%20when%20you%20are%20known%20to%20the%20recipient...%20that%20sort%20of%20thing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20she%20asked%20if%20I%20wanted%20a%20professional%20translator%20to%20look%20at%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20said%20no,%20thinking%20that%20it's%20supposed%20to%20be%20coming%20from%20me.%20%20If%20it%20was%20perfect,%20they'd%20know%20I%20had%20someone%20else%20do%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20I%20corrected%20all%20of%20my%20errors%20and%20took%20the%20letter%20off%20to%20the%20maire.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20I%20sent%20a%20copy%20to%20another%20friend....%20who%20took%20the%20proverbial%20red%20pen%20to%20all%20the%20spelling%20mistakes%20that%20my%20French%20spell%20check%20(and%20I)%20missed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell....%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20said%20I%20didn't%20want%20it%20to%20look%20professional!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETrust%20me,%20it%20didn't.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20most%20people%20think%20of%2
