%20helped%20make%20those%20stifling%20days%20seem%20more%20bearable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMost%20of%20the%20time%20popsicles,%20in%20an%20assortment%20of%20bright,%20not-found-in-nature%20colors,%20%20were%20our%20preferred%20method%20of%20temperature%20regulation.%20%20%20But%20when%20company%20came%20to%20join%20us%20at%20the%20beach%20we%20always%20made%20homemade%20ice%20cream.%20%20Peach%20ice%20cream,%20a%20vanilla-base%20studded%20with%20fresh%20sliced%20peaches,%20was%20the%20house%20specialty.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20those%20sweltering%20days,%20the%20ice%20cream%20maker%20would%20be%20dragged%20out%20of%20the%20shed%20and%20placed%20under%20the%20shade%20of%20the%20house.%20%20%20A%20wooden%20basket%20held%20ice%20and%20rock%20salt%20as%20well%20as%20the%20canister%20for%20the%20ice%20cream%20itself.%20%20%20Once%20assembled%20with%20the%20ingredients%20added,%20we%20twisted%20on%20the%20lid,%20plugged%20in%20the%20motor,%20and%20waited%20with%20anticipation%20as%20the%20ice%20cream%20maker%20hummed%20its%20way%20to%20my%20favorite%20summer%20treat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20no%20surprise%20that%20one%20of%20the%20first%20things%20I%20added%20to%20our%20registry%20when%20we%20got%20married%20over%207%20years%20ago%20was%20an%20ice%20cream%20maker.%20%20My%20countertop%20model,%20cherry%20red%20and%20compact%20(no%20rock%20salt%20required),%20is%20a%20far-cry%20from%20the%20ice%20cream%20maker%20of%20my%20youth.%20%20Yet%20when%20I%20turn%20it%20on,%20the%20house%20filling%20with%20rumbling%20white%20noise,%20I%20still%20get%20that%20giddy%20feeling%20of%20anticipation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOver%20the%20years,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20made,%20and%20happily%20eaten,%20chocolate%20and%20strawberry%20and%20even%20red%20bean%20ice%20cream.%20%20They%20were%20all%20delicious,%20but%20about%20two%20years%20ago,%20I%20stumbled%20upon%20a%20recipe%20for%20vanilla%20ice%20cream%20in%20The%20Gourmet%20Cookbook.%20%20%20I%20tinkered%20with%20it,%20gradually%20deciding%20that%20it%20needed%20less%20sugar,%20and%20it%20has%20been%20my%20go-to%20recipe%20ever%20since.%20%20Spectacular%20on%20its%20own,%20more%20recently%20I%E2%80%99ve%20added%20dulce%20de%20leche%20to%20the%20mix%20and%20today,%20for%20a%20client%20who%20is%20craving%20her%20own%20return%20to%20childhood,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20added%20crushed%20Oreos.%20%20%20This%20summer,%20hoping%20to%20start%20a%20summer%20tradition%20for%20my%20daughter,%20I%20plan%20to%20make%20versions%20with%20strawberries,%20blackberries,%20and,%20in%20a%20nod%20to%20my%20roots,%20fresh%20peaches.%20%20Happy%20cooking!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%20about%201%20quart%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20recipe%20for%20vanilla%20ice%20cream%20in%20The%20Gourmet%20Cookbook%20edited%20by%20Ruth%20Reichl%20inspired%20the%20vanilla%20base%20for%20this%20recipe.%20While%20I%20add%20Oreo%20cookies,%20you%20can%20add%20fresh%20fruit,%20other%20types%20of%20cookies,%20nuts,%20or%20sauces%20like%20caramel%20or%20chocolate%20(chill%20sauces%20before%20adding)%20to%20the%20vanilla%20base%20and%20get%20equally%20delicious%20results.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20heavy%20cream,%20whole%20milk,%20sugar,%20and%20salt%20in%20a%20heavy-bottomed%20medium%20saucepan%20until%20bubbles%20form%20around%20the%20edge%20of%20the%20pan.%20%20%20Place%20the%20beaten%20eggs%20in%20a%20bowl%20and%20slowly%20add%20the%20cream%20and%20milk%20mixture,%20whisking%20constantly.%20%20Return%20the%20mixture%20to%20the%20saucepan%20and%20heat%20over%20medium%20heat,%20stirring%20constantly%20with%20a%20rubber%20spatula%20(be%20sure%20to%20scrape%20the%20sides%20of%20the%20pan),%20until%20the%20temperature%20reaches%20170%20to%20175%20degrees%20and%20the%20custard%20begins%20to%20thicken.%20%20Pour%20the%20custard%20through%20a%20fine%20mesh%20strainer.%20%20Add%20the%20vanilla%20extract.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECool%20to%20room%20temperature,%20stirring%20often.%20%20%20Refrigerate,%20covered,%20until%20very%20cold%20%E2%80%93%20at%20least%20three%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFreeze%20according%20to%20your%20ice%20cream%20maker%20instructions.%20When%20ice%20cream%20is%20almost%20frozen,%20add%20the%20Oreo%20pieces%20while%20the%20ice%20cream%20maker%20is%20running.%20Once%20everything%20is%20mixed%20together%20turn%20off%20the%20ice%20cream%20maker%20and%20freeze%20in%20an%20airtight%20container%20until%20ready%20to%20serve.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
