Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. masa harina flour
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 12 c. chicken stock
  • 3 x cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 x onions, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. chili pwdr
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. dry oregano
  • 2 Tbsp. grnd cumin
  • 1 tsp freshly grnd pepper
  • 1 can minced green chiles, 8-oz
  • 5 c. minced cooked chicken
  • 1 can white hominy (15-oz), liquid removed
  • 1 can yellow hominy (15-oz), liquid removed
  • 8 x prepared tamales, cut into pcs Salt, to taste Shredded Monterey Jack cheese

Directions

  1. Mix the flour with the water in a large stockpot, stirring till smooth.
  2. Add in the chicken stock.
  3. Bring the mix to a boil. Add in the garlic, onions, chili pwdr, brown sugar, oregano, cumin, pepper and chiles.
  4. Simmer, covered, for 15 min, stirring occasionally. Add in the chicken and hominy.
  5. Simmer for 20 min longer, stirring occasionally. Stir in the tamales and salt.
  6. Ladle into soup bowls.
  7. Serve garnished with shredded Monterey Jack cheese.
  8. Note:The masa harina flour gives this soup a delicious tamale flavor. The soup is hearty sufficient to have as a meal, along with our Caesar Salad.
