Ingredients

  • 3 c. soft bread crumbs
  • 1/3 c. melted butter or possibly margarine
  • 1 c. brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp grnd cinnamon
  • 1 tsp grnd cloves
  • 1 tsp grated lemon peel
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 c. peeled and thinly sliced cooking apples
  • 2 c. fresh or possibly frzn blackberries
  • 1/4 c. water Heavy cream or possibly whipped cream or possibly ice cream, optional

Directions

  1. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
  2. Note: If fresh blackberries aren't available and you do not want to use frzn fruit, two additional c. of sliced apples may be substituted for the blackberries. Toss bread crumbs with butter. Set aside.
  3. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, lemon peel and lemon juice in mixing bowl. Add in apple slices and blackberries and gently fold to combine.
  4. Spread a third of the bread crumbs in buttered 2-qt casserole. Cover with half of fruit mix, then another third of the bread crumbs. Repeat layering, using remaining fruit and bread crumbs.
  5. Drizzle with water. Cover and bake at 400 degrees 30 min. Uncover and bake additional 30 min till lightly browned. Serve hot with heavy cream, whipped cream or possibly ice cream.
