Hi Jann,
This is a good question. For now, the points are just for status. They let others know how much you are contributing to the site. We plan to give some kind of perks to top contributors over time, but that has been ad hoc so far. If you have any ideas or suggestions of what you would be neat to get for being a contributor, please let me know.

Drew Carey used to introduce his show Whose Line is it Anyway? by saying ".....the show where everything's made up and the points don't matter." Interesting that the points CookEatShare awards, though they don't matter either, can serve as a marker or milestone, and in that respect, as an individual stimulus to be active. But for most of us that has little impact on why we contribute. For me, it's just fun....and "the points don't matter!"
