Ingredients
- 2 packages. dry yeast
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 2 c. hot water
- 1/3 c. honey or possibly apple juice concentrate
- 1/3 c. oil
- 1 teaspoon brewer's yeast (optional)
- 1 T bran (optional)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 c. white flour
- 4-6 c. whole wheat flour
- 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 T water
- Sesame or possibly poppy seeds for topping
Directions
- Mix first 3 ingredients. Let yeast dissolve, then add in honey, oil, brewer's yeast, bran, large eggs and white flour. Add in whole wheat flour, one cup at a time. Dough shouldn't be sticky. Coat with oil and cover with a towel. Let rise for 1 hour. Take "challah" without a Bracha. Makes 24 rolls, or possibly 2 loaves.To make a loaf, divide dough into two halves. Roll each piece till 1/2 inch thick. Roll up in jelly roll fashion and put in loaf pan. Brush with egg yolk and water. Sprinkle with sesame or possibly poppy seeds if you like. Cover and let rise 1/2 hour. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for 30-35 min or possibly till brown.
