Ingredients

Cost per serving $0.39 view details
  • 1 1/4 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/4 c. unbleached white flour
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. baking pwdr
  • Dash salt
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 3/4 c. Crisco (see below)
  • 1 c. buttermilk (may substitute sweet lowfat milk)

Directions

  1. May use all white if you like.
  2. Thoroughly mix dry ingredients, cut in Crisco till crumbly. Add in lowfat milk all at once to make soft dough. Roll out on floured board to make dough more manageable, add in extra flour as needed. Cut and place on buttered pan. Coat tops with melted butter. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 min till golden.
  3. NOTE: I don't use soda in my biscuits, if you prefer to, add in 1 tsp. soda.
  4. These freeze nicely. Just freeze in plastic bag; place on buttered pan and coat tops with melted butter to heat.
  5. Optional: Use 1/2 c. oil instead of Crisco and just mix all above together. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake.
