Guys! I have exciting news! I am headed back to Eat Write Retreat next month! As you may remember, I attended its first 2 years, but due to finances I did not go last year. So I am super excited to be headed back this year, and in an all new location too! Philadelphia! In the meantime, attendees have been encouraged to create watermelon recipes for some video work that we will be doing with one of the conference’s great sponsors, the National Watermelon Promotion Board. ,%20but%20then%20I%20realized%20that%20literally,%20as%20I%20was%20thinking%20this,%20I%20was%20also%20busy%20putting%20together%20a%20trial%20run%20of%20a%20mango%20chaat%20dish.%20If%20you%20can%20have%20mango%20in%20chaat,%20then%20why%20not%20watermelon?%20No%20it%20is%20not%20traditional%20in%20India%20(to%20my%20knowledge),%20but%20it%20is%20juicy%20and%20sweet%20just%20like%20a%20ripe%20mango.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20the%20night%20after%20the%20trial%20run%20of%20a%20mango%20chaat,%20we%20had%20a%20trial%20run%20of%20watermelon%20chaat.%20Which%20went%20over%20really%20well%20I%20am%20excited%20to%20report!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20served%20this%20dish%20at%20my%20chaat%20themed%20get%20together%20last%20weekend%20(%3C%E2%80%93and%20be%20sure%20to%20check%20out%20that%20link%20if%20you%20want%20to%20learn%20more%20about%20chaat,%20an%20Indian%20snack%20food)%20and%20it%20went%20over%20really%20well!%20Because%20the%20watermelon%20is%20so%20refreshing,%20this%20is%20one%20chaat%20that%20can%20definitely%20be%20made%20a%20little%20spicy%20if%20you%20want%20to.%20In%20an%20ideal%20world,%20it%20would%20be%20tossed%20together%20right%20before%20serving%20because%20the%20watermelon%20is%20so%20juicy.%20Do%20you%20remember%20those%20commercials%20for%20Rice%20Krispies%20where%20they%20referred%20to%20the%20%E2%80%9Csnap,%20crackle%20and%20pop%E2%80%9D%20that%20you%20could%20hear%20as%20the%20puffed%20rice%20absorbed%20the%20milk?%20Well,%20it%20is%20the%20same%20with%20watermelon%20juice%20(and%20lemon%20juice),%20and%20I%20have%20read%20in%20some%20Indian%20cookbooks%20that%20that%20sound%20is%20the%20hallmark%20of%20some%20chaat%20dishes.%20My%20kids,%20not%20having%20grown%20up%20with%20those%20ads,%20were%20astounded%20at%20the%20sound!!!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20personally%20find%20the%20crispiness%20of%20the%20puffed%20rice%20and%20fried%20gram%20flour%20noodles%20to%20be%20essential,%20but%20if%20you%20are%20making%20this%20for%20anyone%20with%20nut%20allergies%20you%20could%20leave%20out%20the%20pistachios%20in%20a%20pinch.%20Just%20add%20more%20of%20the%20crunchy%20noodles%20and%20crispy%20puffed%20rice.%20I%20prefer%20my%20chaat%20masala,%20but%20feel%20free%20to%20use%20a%20commercial%20one%E2%80%93on%20occasion%20I%20have%20doctored%20the%20MDH%20brand%20to%20my%20liking.%20If%20your%20fried%20gram%20flour%20noodles%20are%20not%20seasoned,%20be%20sure%20to%20add%20some%20cayenne%20powder%20as%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20last%20note:%20any%20time%20a%20recipe%20calls%20for%20raw%20red%20onion%20I%20soak%20it%20first.%20This%20will%20help%20eliminate%20the%20fumes%20that%20can%20cause%20an%20upset%20stomach.%20So%20dice%20the%20onion,%20then%20soak%20in%20cold%20water%20for%205-15%20minutes.%20Drain%20and%20then%20use%20in%20recipe%E2%80%93get%20it%20as%20dry%20as%20possible,%20drain%20it%20really%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWatermelon%20Chaat%20(indian%20Snack%20Salad)%20%20%20Everything%20about%20chaat%20is%20to%20taste,%20so%20feel%20free%20to%20increase%20or%20reduce%20any%20of%20these%20amounts.%20%20Author:%20TheSpicedLife%20Recipe%20type:%20snack,%20salad%20Cuisine:%20Indian%20%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDry:%20%C2%BD%20cup%20Ganthia%20(deep%20fried%20thicker%20noodles%20made%20from%20gram%20flour)*%20%C2%BD%20cup%20salted%20and%20roasted%20pistachios%20%C2%BE%20cup%20puffed%20rice%20cereal%20Wet:%205%20cups%20diced%20watermelon%201-2%20T%20lemon%20juice%201%20T%20chopped%20cilantro%201%20T%20chopped%20basil%20(preferably%20a%20cinnamon%20or%20global%20basil)%20%C2%BC%20cup%20diced%20soaked%20red%20onion%201-2%20t%20chaat%20masala%20cayenne%20powder,%20optional%20(see%20notes%20above),%20to%20taste%20%20%20Instructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToss%20together%20the%20dry%20ingredients.%20Set%20aside.%20Toss%20together%20the%20wet%20ingredients.%20Right%20before%20serving,%20toss%20the%20wet%20and%20dry%20together.%20Taste%20for%20additional%20cayenne,%20salt,%20lemon%20juice%20and/or%20chaat%20masala.%20%203.2.2499%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*Here%20is%20an%20affiliate%20link%20to%20the%20exact%20brand%20that%20I%20used,%20but%20feel%20free%20to%20substitute%20any%20of%20the%20Indian%20crunchy%20fried%20snacks:%20Mirch%20Masala%20%E2%80%93%20Tikka%20Ganthia.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
