Directions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar together till fluffy. Add in large eggs and beat for 1 minute. Put cocoa and coloring in cup to make a paste. Add in to shortening sugar mix. Add in salt. Put vanilla in buttermilk and slowly add in to creamed mix alternately with flour. Put together vinegar and soda in cup and mix thoroughly. Blend vinegar and soda mix in batter. Don't BEAT.Bake in 2 (8") layers at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 min. Cool on cake racks. Cut layers in 2 with thread; spread frosting between layers and on top.
  2. Cook lowfat milk and flour till thick. Cool and chill till ready to use. Mix butter, sugar and vanilla. Beat together with mixer till creamy; add in flour lowfat milk mix a little at a time. Continue beating till frosting is fluffy.
