Ingredients
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 T cocoa
- 2 1/4 c. sifted flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 ounce red food coloring
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 T vinegar
- 1 teaspoon soda
Directions
- Cream shortening and sugar; add in large eggs, beaten well. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add in to first mix; add in salt and buttermilk alternately with flour. Add in vanilla. Dissolve soda in vinegar and add in last. Blend all ingredients as little as possible. Bake in two 8 inch layers at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 min. When completely cool, split layers in two. Handle carefully. Frost with following:
- Cream 1 cup butter with 1 cup granulated sugar. Cook 5 tbsp flour in 1 cup lowfat milk till very thick. Allow to cool. Then put together and add in 1 tsp vanilla (use electric mixer). Frost all layers and top of cake.
