%20here%20in%20upstate%20New%20York%20and%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20a%20dinner%20that%20not%20only%20warmed%20my%20soul%20but%20my%20body%20as%20well!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20a%20few%20bottles%20of%20ale%20kicking%20around%20from%20a%20promotional%20post%20I%20did%20for%20the%20holidays%20and%20what%20better%20way%20to%20put%20one%20of%20those%20bottles%20to%20use!%20If%20you%20don't%20have%20ale,%20plain%20old%20beer--and%20it%20doesn't%20have%20to%20be%20a%20snob%20beer--it%20can%20be%20the%20cheapest%20one%20you%20can%20find,%20will%20do%20in%20place%20of%20the%20ale.%20I%20merely%20used%20what%20I%20had.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20used%20my%20newest%20slow%20cooker,%20the%20casserole%20crock,%20to%20make%20these.%20I%20noticed%20that%20I%20had%20to%20cook%20them%20longer%20than%20I%20usually%20cook%20short%20ribs%20in%20a%20conventional%20slow%20cooker.%20It%20probably%20has%20to%20do%20with%20the%20fact%20that%20this%20is%20a%20much%20shallower%20cooking%20area%20than%20a%20conventional%205-6%20quart%20model,%20so%20if%20you%20use%20the%20casserole%20crock,%20plan%20on%20at%20least%2010%20hours%20on%20low%20if%20you%20want%20it%20to%20fall%20off%20the%20bone.%20%20If%20not,%20then%208%20hours%20will%20probably%20do%20you%20nicely.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20added%20a%20can%20of%20whole%20white%20potatoes%20to%20mine%20in%20the%20last%20hour%20of%20cooking.%20%20With%20ultra-long%20cooking%20times,%20I%20prefer%20to%20use%20canned%20so%20they%20don't%20overcook%20and%20get%20mushy.%20But%20adding%20veggies%20or%20potatoes%20isn't%20necessary%20here.%20%20These%20would%20be%20nice%20served%20with%20mashed%20potatoes%20or%20even%20nice%20thick%20steak%20fries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20au%20jus%20gravy%20mix,%20flour,%20thyme%20and%20brown%20sugar%20in%20a%20small%20bowl,%20making%20sure%20to%20get%20any%20lumps%20out%20of%20the%20brown%20sugar.%20Place%20into%20a%204-6%20quart%20slow%20cooker.%20FYI--I%20used%20a%203.5%20quart%20casserole%20crock%20to%20make%20this.%20Add%20the%20ale%20and%20stir%20well%20to%20combine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20a%20heavy%20skillet%20over%20medium-high%20heat.%20Add%20the%20oil%20and%20brown%20short%20ribs%20on%20all%20sides.%20Remove%20to%20a%20plate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20same%20pan,%20saute%20the%20sliced%20onion%20and%20garlic,%20stirring%20constantly,%20for%20about%203-5%20minutes--don't%20let%20it%20burn.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDeglaze%20the%20pan%20with%20the%201/2%20cup%20water;%20mix%20the%20onions%20and%20water%20into%20the%20au%20jus%20mixture%20in%20the%20slow%20cooker.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20short%20ribs%20in%20the%20slow%20cooker,%20cover%20and%20cook%20on%20HI%204-6%20hours%20or%20LOW%208-10%20hours%20(times%20are%20approximate).%20If%20using%20the%20casserole%20crock,%20please%20read%20the%20above%20post--it%20will%20probably%20take%20longer%20in%20one%20of%20those.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20the%20ribs%20to%20a%20serving%20plate.%20%20Stir%20in%20the%20heavy%20cream,%20combining%20well.%20Pour%20gravy%20over%20short%20ribs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%20about%204%20people%20(I%20had%208%20short%20ribs%20and%20allowed%202%20meaty%20ribs%20per%20person).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESlow%20Cooker%20Cream%20&%20Ale%20Short%20Ribs%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECopyright%20%C2%A9%20Judith%20Hannemann%20aka%20The%20Midnight%20Baker%202015.%20All%20Rights%20Reserved.%20No%20part%20of%20this%20website%20may%20be%20reproduced%20without%20The%20Midnight%20Baker's%20express%20consent.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFollow%20The%20Midnight%20Baker's%20board%20%E2%98%86%E2%98%86Super%20Bowl%20Parties%E2%98%86%E2%98%86%20on%20Pinterest.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFollow%20The's%20board%20%E2%99%A8Hot%20Fun%20in%20the%20Summertime%20Blog%20Hop%E2%99%A8%20on%20Pinterest.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
