Shoo-Fly Pie Recipe

This is probably the most well known amish pie. When we were small children our Grandfather used to take great pleasure in telling us that shoo-fly pie was made of actual flies! As we gasped in horror, he would wave his hand as if "shoo'ing a fly away" and say we got tired of shooing the flies away as the pie was cooling so we just put them in the pie!
It's great with whipped cream or ice cream. Hold the flies!

  1. Preheat 375 first 10mins then 350
  2. Put unbaked pie shell in the oven for about 5-6 mins to prevent the bottom from getting soggy.
  3. Combine the topping ingredients in a bowl and cut together with a pastry blender or rub mixture with your fingers until mixture forms fine crumbs. Set aside.
  4. Dissolve baking soda in water in a large mixing bowl. Add molasses and salt and blend well.
  5. Pour into the pie shell and sprinkle evenly with the crumb topping.
  6. Bake in preheated 375 deg oven for 10 mins, then reduce the temperature to 350 and bake for another 30 mins, or until set.
  7. When the pie is given a gentle shake the top remains firm.
  8. Serve warm
